Kent teenager crashes car while text messaging

The Seattle Times reports that a 16-year-old Kent girl received minor injuries when she crashed her car because she was distracted while reading a text message.

According to the report the girl said to police, “But officer, I just looked down to read a text from my boyfriend.”

Motor vehicle code RCW 46.61.668 prohibits sending, reading or writing a text message while driving.

Driver distraction, such as text messaging, is a major factor in 33% of all crashes and 27% of near crashes. A recent accident on I-5 was thought to be caused by a man adjusting his cell phone. You might want to read, “What if my accident was caused by someone using a cell phone?
