Skyway drunk driving accident critically injures pedestrian

A 20 year-old pedestrian was critically injured near Renton on Friday evening after he was hit by a suspected drunken driver. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The pedestrian accident occurred in the 13400 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way, 1 mile west of Fenton. The injured man had just gotten off a bus when he was hit by a 1995 Oldsmobile driven by 44-year-old Renton man. According to the report in The Seattle Times, the man flew up over the hood and into the car windshield when he was hit. It is unclear whether the Oldsmobile was speeding.

The driver of the Oldsmobile was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The Seattle Times article mentioned that the pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk at the time of the accident. Vehicle Code RCW 46.61.235 states that a driver must stop and remain stopped at an unmarked or marked crosswalk when a pedestrian or bicycle is upon or within one lane of the half of the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling.
