What exams and tests confirm a Whiplash diagnosis?

How do doctors diagnosis a Whiplash Injury after a car accident? A diagnosis is made by obtaining a patient histroy, performing a head and neck exam and taking x-rays to rule out other conditions or injuries such as bone fractures.

Accident victims with possible neck, back or brain injuries are transported from the accident scene, with a cervical collar in place around your neck to insure your head and neck remain immobile while you are being transported.

Once you arrive to the hospital, x-rays will be taken if you have muscle weakness, soreness in the back of your neck, or if your consciousness seems impaired.

The physician will conduct tests to to determine if your spinal cord is damaged by testing the physical strength of your limbs, sensation to touch in various areas of your body and checking your reflexes.

If your x-rays are normal, you may not be required to wear a cervical collar. However, if it appears that there may be a serious injury or fracture, a CT Scan or MRI may be required.
