Hot Wheels reports lists most stolen cars in Washington State

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) just issued their annual Hot Wheels report which lists the top 10 most stolen cars in Washington state for 2008. The NICB is a not-for-profit organization which is dedicated to fighting insurance fraud and vehicle theft.

According to the NICB, older cars tend to be the most stolen because thieves have a market for used auto parts.

The top 10 stolen vehicles for Washington state are:

  1. 1992 Honda Accord
  2. 1995 Honda Civic
  3. 1989 Toyota Camry
  4. 1994 Acura Integra
  5. 1993 Saturn SL
  6. 1994 Nissan Sentra
  7. 1988 Toyota Pickup
  8. 1995 Nissan Pathfinder
  9. 1993 Subaru Legacy
  10. 1994 Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee

The NISCB suggests a “layered approach” to protecting your vehicle and preventing car theft. These common sense solutions include:seattle personal injury attorney

  • Locks & Keys — Always lock your car.
  • Alarms – Install a car alarm which issues an audible warning.
  • Immobilizing Device – Use smart keys, “kill switches”, fuel cut-offs and other devices which prevent your car from being started are highly effective.
  • Tracking Device – Install GPS systems which track a stolen vehicle help police recover a stolen vehicle. Vehicles with a tracking system are often recovered faster and with less damage.

The NICB also recommends checking a vehicles VIN before purchasing a used automobile.

The NW Insurance Council reports that several cities in Washington state rank high in the nation for car thefts. Yakima was listed as the third-highest auto theft rate in the nation. The SeattleTacomaBellevue metroplitan area ranked 25th in the nation for auto theft.
