  • Warn other drivers using your signals and speed whenever you are stopping, turning or changing lanes
  • Keep a proper following distance, allowing for the icy conditions
  • Pump the brakes gently if you don't have antilock brakes.

King County car accident deaths down in 2008

The King County Medical Examiner's office reports that traffic accident deaths were down in 2008 when compared with 2007. In 2008, 163 people were killed as a result of motor vehicle accidents and in 2007, 170 people were killed.

Of the 163 people who died as a result of a motor vehicle accident, only 112 of the accidents occurred in King County; 51 people were injured in accidents outside of the county but the injured person was taken to a King County Hospital -- usually Harborview Medical Center in Seattle -- where they died.

Seattle makes top 5 list for safest pedestrian cities

Seattle was just listed as number 5 on the list of safest cities for pedestrians to walk or bike. In a report released yesterday by Transportation for America and Surface Transportation Policy Partnership -- two advocates for "complete streets" -- the best and worst walking cities was provided. Complete streets are those that include separate areas for walking of biking and streets that are clearly marked for other transportation forms.

According to Transportation for America, 76,000 Americans were killed in pedestrian accidents in the past 15 years. In the last 10 years, 3,906 children under the age of 16 were killed. Children and the elderly are more apt to be severely or injured in pedestrian accidents. Washington state has lower rates of fatal pedestrian accidents than the U.S. average; In Washington, 1.03 pedestrians are killed per 100K people while the U.S. average is 1.26.

In a study that looked at 52 different metro areas with more than a million residents, Seattle was ranked in the top five safest for pedestrians. The research studies include the number of people who walk to work, amount of sidewalks, size of city blocks, and the number of deaths.

Worst 5 cities for walking or biking:

seattle pedestrian accident lawyer
  1. Orlando-Kissimmee
  2. Tampa-St. Petersburg
  3. Miami-Fort Lauderdale
  4. Jacksonville
  5. Memphis

Best 5 cities for walking or biking:

  1. Minneapolis
  2. Boston
  3. New York
  4. Pittsburg
  5. Seattle
Transportation for America believes that cities should promote walking and bicycling and that the cause of many "accidents" is poor roadway planning. They believe that sidewalks and bike paths and other transportation infrastructure should be designed with walking and biking in mind and geared towards older people as well.

Insurance Institute testifies that cell phone use while driving increases accident risk by four times

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) testified before a US House subcommittee on November 4th regarding distracted driving and cell phone. In the IIHS testimony, data was provided that shows that cell phone usage by drivers puts the driver at increased risk for a car accident and impaired driving performance. The IIHS testified that different studies reach different conclusions about what the actual statistics are, but a recent study that was "well-controlled" and had a "large number of crash-involved drivers" found that that the risk of an accident was four times higher when the driver was talking on either a hand-held or hands-free cell phone.

The IIHS reports that their data shows that the fact of using a cell phone, regardless of whether it is hands-free or hand-held, poses the same accident risk.

See the IIHS web-site for a full text of testimony, Driven to Distraction: Technological Devices and Vehicle Safety.

Oregon joins Washington in banning hand-held cell phones while driving

Oregon is joining Washington and California in banning all drivers from using hand held cell phones while driving. Other Western states including Montana, Idaho and Nevada do not have a ban in place yet according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The Oregon cell phone ban will go into effect on January 1st, 2010 and drivers who are caught will receive a $90 fine. Drivers, however, will be able to use a hands free device while driving and some certain drivers, like law enforcement officers working for public safety, will be exempt. Unlike Washington's ban, Oregon's hand held ban will be a primary offense.

Oregon has had a cell phone ban in place for teenagers since 2007 but it was listed as a secondary offense. In 2010, the restrictions for teenagers will increase, prohibiting teens from using a hands free cell phone.

All drivers in Oregon are prohibited from text messaging while driving.
