Yelm man critically injured in motorcycle accident; driver charged with ‘Vehicular Assault’

A Yelm man, James J. Stilton, 46, was critically injured in a motorcycle accident on Friday afternoon. Stilton was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment.

According to a report in the Nisqually Valley News, Stilton was riding his motorcycle northbound on Vail Road when he was rear-ended as he attempted to make a left turn onto Hannus Road.

Stilton was hit by Steven P. Wetzel, 26, also of Yelm. Wetzel was charged with Vehicular Assault in the accident because police believe he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. They also cited him for driver inattention.

Vehicle code, RCW 46.61.522 Vehicular Assault, states that a driver can be charged if a person is seriously injured in an accident and the driver was driving recklessly, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs or driving without regard for the safety of others.
