Oprah calls for drivers to put down their cell phones

Oprah Winfrey has launched a campaign to get drivers to declare their motor vehicles as "No Phone Zones" and give up texting and cell phone usage while driving.

Some safety advocates estimate that 6,000 motor vehicle fatalities and 500,000 traffic accidents are caused by distracted driving each year including using cell phones.
Oprah said:

"It's like Russian roulette every time you pick up your phone in the car."
Oprah is trying to bring distracted driving to the forefront of people's minds and is asking people to sign a pledge not to talk on the phone or text while driving. Oprah's No Phone Zone web-site already has 233,074 signatures from people pledging to a)not text while driving; b)not text and only use handsfree calling while driving; c)no talking or texting while driving.

Teenage girl killed in Milton hit-and-run pedestrian accident, driver and passenger arrested

The Seattle P-I reports that 15-year-old Kelsey Parrett, of Fife, has died of injuries she sustained in a hit-and-run pedestrian accident on Wednesday night around 9pm in Milton.

According to the report, Parrett and a friend were walking to the friend's house after attending a youth meeting at a church when she was hit from behind by a GMC van that left the accident scene.

Parrett was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where she was determined to have an irreversible brain injury; she died on Thursday morning at 5:30am.

Police said the driver and his passenger, both men, left the accident scene and parked the van about one-half mile away. The men then returned to the accident scene on foot and then left without reporting to officers they were involved. Police followed the men and arrested the 47-year-old driver and his 48-year-old passenger for investigation of Vehicular Homicide and failure to remain at an accident.

Vehicular Homicide can be charged if a person dies in an accident and the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving recklessly, or driving without regard for the safety of others. Washington State Vehicle code RCW 46.62.020 mandates that any vehicle involved in an accident resulting in the injury to or death of any person shall immediately stop their vehicle at the accident scene and remain at the accident scene.

Tips to avoid driveway back over accidents

One of the most tragic pedestrian accidents are driveway back over accidents in which a family member, friend, or neighbor accidentally backs over and seriously injures or perhaps kills a child. In 2007, there were approximately 2,000 children injured when a car or truck backed over a child and almost 100 deaths. Every year, the numbers are very similar.

Some vehicles come equipped with object detection devices but even with sensory systems like rear view cameras, half of drivers still hit objects behind them. One of the reasons is that each vehicle has blind spots or zones in which drivers do not have clear vision. Minivans, SUVs and pickup trucks have the largest blind spots. Blind spots can also exist in the front of cars and children can be hit and run over when a vehicle pulls forward into a driveway.

Tips to prevent a back over accident:

  • walk completely around your vehicle every time you drive
  • make sure children are in the house and haven't run outside to say "bye"
  • teach children to never play around vehicles
  • be especially careful at hectic times such as family parties, holidays
  • be extra careful on days when the weather is considered "nice" when neighborhood children are out roller skating, playing and riding their bicycles

A teenage girl was injured in a pedestrian accident today in South Seattle when she was hit by the light rail trail while talking on her cell phone.

According to a report on KOMO News.com, the pedestrian v. train accident occurred at Martin Luther King, Jr. Way and Othello. Another report said that she suffered cuts and bruises on her eyes and legs and was taken to a hospital with "non life-threatening injuries."

Motorcycle accident deaths at lowest since 1997

The Governors Highway Safety Association released the preliminary finding of a study which reports that motorcycle accident deaths are at their lowest since 1997. The report found that after 11 years of increasing motorcycle accident fatalities, in 2009 motorcycle accident deaths declined by 10% or more.

The report cited some reasons for the the decline in fatalities including:

  • less motorcycle leisure riding
  • fewer beginning riders
  • increased awareness of motorcycle safety programs
  • and poor weather in some states which reduced riding hours.
Motorcycle sales dropped by 42 percent in 2009 because of the economy so there were fewer novice riders out there is one reason for the drop in deaths speculates the report.

The report recommends that more progress can be made if riders do the following:

  • wear approved helmets
  • don't drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • reduce speeding
  • take approved motorcycle training courses

Driveway accidents: the most deadly and traumatic of pedestrian accidents

This is not a pleasant post but it is one that must be written because it is important that parents, caregivers and motorists be aware that one of the deadliest types of car/pedestrian accidents occur in driveways. Today, we entered the term "driveway accident" into a Google news search and found the following news stories:
issaquah pedestrian accident attorney

  • Wenatchee World. April 14: A 17 month old boy suffered cuts, scrapes, and bruises when he was hit by the undercarriage of a vehicle that was backing out of a driveway.
  • The Olympian: April 14: A 3-year-old girl, Saniah Marcus, died after an accident in which her mother's 25-year-old fiancé pulled out of the driveway and ran over and killed the girls while she was riding her tricycle in University Place.
  • KMOX News, April 12: A 6-year-old Pontoon Beach girls, Lyvia Roach, was killed after she was run over in a driveway near her home.
  • Journal Courier: April 14, 2010: A woman apparently ran over her 2-year-old son in the driveway of the family's West Center Street home.
  • Standard-Examiner: April 9, 2010. No charges expected in Roy fatal driveway accident against a mother who accidentally ran over her 4-year-old son, Tyler Foote, in the driveway of their Roy home.
With results like these, it seems like driveway-related motor vehicle injuries to children is an epidemic. Driveway accidents are likely to cause traumatic head injuries and have a 10 times increase in death as compared to other pediatric accidents. Every year, more than 100 children are killed and thousands are injured when a car or SUV backs over them.

Education and public awareness is the key to protecting young and vulnerable children from devastating accidents. Always ensure adult supervision or children when backing your vehicle. If you need to move a vehicle, even only a short distance, place the child inside the vehicle while you move it. Adequate fencing and door locks can also keep children away from driveways.

Shelton man charged in 'aggressive driving' motorcycle accident

A man who changed lanes in front of a motorcyclist and then braked hard causing a rear-end motor vehicle accident has been charged with felony hit-and-run driving and 2nd degree assault and has been booked into Lewis County Jail.

According to The Olympian, Matthew J. Slames, 30, of Shelton was driving his 2008 Subaru south on Interstate 5 just south of Chehalis when he made an abrupt lane change and braked causing Nicholas Bartley, 41, of Ethel, to rear-end him with his 2008 Yamaha motorcycle.
