Honda and Acura vehicles to have new braking safety feature

Honda Motor Co. says that it will install a new safety feature on all Honda brand and Acura brand vehicles. The new feature is a brake override safety system which will cut power to the engine , preventing runaway car accidents.

According to Honda, all Honda and Acura passenger vehicles will have the new technology installed by the end of 2011. The new system cuts engine power when both the brake and accelerator are pressed at the same time.

This safety feature is being installed after approximately 6,200 complaints involving sudden acceleration — including 89 deaths and 57 injuries — were attributed to some Toyota Motor Corp. vehicles. In March, Honda recalled approximately 400,000 vehicles in the U.S. because of “soft brakes.”
