2 injured in car accident on I-5 near Northgate Mall

A two-car accident on an onramp to Interstate 5 injured a 33-year-old Seattle woman and a 37-year-old Everett man.

According to a report in Tacoma's The News Tribune, the Seattle woman, driving a Ford Escort, attempted to pass a Chevrolet Blazer on the onramp near the Northgate mall. The Escort hit the Blazer with such force, it rolled.

A baby in the Escort was not injured in the auto accident. The Seattle woman was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with minor injuries. The driver of the Blazer was also taken to Harborview.

The Washington State Patrol is investigating the cause of the motor vehicle accident but they believe alcohol or drugs were involved.

2 men killed, 2 paramedics injured when speeding car runs into ambulance on Interstate 5 in Seattle

A 24-year-old Tumwater man and his 23-year-old passenger, a Lynnwood man, were killed in a car accident early this morning when the BMW they were riding in crashed into the rear of a Seattle Fire Department ambulance. The paramedics in the ambulance were taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.

According to a report by Seattle's KOMO News, the accident occurred in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Mercer Street around 2:45am.

Police believe that the driver of the BMW was under the influence of alcohol and speeding when he clipped another vehicle and then crashed into the ambulance.

Two senior citizens injured in Seattle pedestrian accident

A man in his 80's and a female in his 70's were taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after being injured in a pedestrian accident in downtown Seattle on Thursday.

According to a report in Tacoma's The News Tribune, the couple were in a crosswalk at Roy Street and First Avenue North when a motorist ran a red light and hit them.

The male victim went up on to the car's hood and hit his head on the windshield according to witnesses.

The pedestrian accident is currently being investigated.

Island Crest Way "dangerous" says Mercer Island residents after several pedestrian accidents

Residents of Mercer Island spoke to the City Council on July 12 and shared their concerns that Island Crest Way is dangerous. Residents said that the road way poorly designed.

There have been several pedestrian accidents on the road in the past few weeks. Residents are asking for a crosswalk at 47th street but City Manager said that the crosswalks are not the highest priority. The City manager Rich Conrad said that crosswalks at 42nd and 47th streets will be completed by the end of the year.

Olympia man awarded $2million in lawsuit against state for poorly designed roadway

John Lancaster, 22, of Olympia, has been awarded a $2million settlement after he sued the Washington Department of Transportation (DOT) claiming that the DOT failed to repair a poorly designed intersection where he was critically injured in a motor vehicle accident.

Lancaster was riding his motorcycle on U.S. Highway 101 when he collided with a car that was making a left hand turn onto the highway. Lancaster nearly died in the accident and has limited use of one hand and cannot not use the other arm. He was on life support at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for three weeks after the accident.

According to a report in The Olympian, the intersection where Lancaster was hit had been especially problematic. There had been 55 accidents at the intersection since 2001 including two fatal ones. In 2001, a DOT study said that the intersection was poorly designed and it recommended closing the left-turn lane. At one point the state legislature had funded $1 million to repair the road but thee repair has never been completed.

Wenatchee teen critically injured in Chelan-area motor vehicle accident

A 17-year-old Wenatchee teen, Joshua Ray, was airlifted to Spokane's Sacred Heart Medical Center after he was critically injured in a motor vehicle accident on Highway 97A, nine miles south of Chelan.
According to a report in The Wenatchee World, the driver of the pickup truck that Ray was riding in, Tyler Totten, 18, of East Wenatchee, was attempting to make a U-turn when the truck was hit by a Subaru Impreza driven by Craig Hocking, 25, of East Wenatchee. Totten was cited for making an illegal U-turn. Two other passengers in the pickup truck, Rebecca Howell and Brandon Neal, were treated for minor injuries. New Ford Focus provides safety features for teenage drivers

The 2010 and 2011 Ford Focus provides a safety feature for teenage drivers. A standard safety feature on all new models is the "MyKey Safety System" which provides a specialized car key for teen drivers which allows parents to set safety features for their teen drivers including:

  • limiting the top speed of vehicle
  • enabling alerts which provides a tone when the vehicle hits 45, 55 and 65 mph.
  • enabling traction control
  • muting the car radio until everyone in the vehicle buckles up
  • controlling the radio volume
Ford also provides the MyKey system in Taurus and F-150 models and it plans to make it standard on other vehicles including the Fiesta in the future.

Ford also believes that the MyKey system will be a desired feature for fleet vehicles.

Forks man charged with negligent driving in Highway 101 car accident that injured teen

John Abrahamson, 65, of Forks, faces negligent driving charges in the single car accident in which he suffered a back injury and a broken and possibly inured his passenger, William McBride, 14, of Tenino.

The Olympian reports that Abrahamson was driving a a U-Haul truck on U.S. Highway 101 when he fell asleep and ran off the road, hitting a tree.

According to The Olympian, Abrahamson will be charged with negligent driving.

Teenage driver killed along with 2 others in single car accident near Soap Lake

The Seattle Times reports that a single car accident near Soap Lake, Washington resulted in the death of three young men, including the teenage driver.

According to the report, Taylor Blackburn, 16, of Ephrata, died of a head injury at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane after being airlifted there after his car went off the road and hit a power pole.

Killed in the motor vehicle accident were Kyle Hartley, 17, of Ephrata, and Travis McAfee, 22, of Wilson Creek.

Soap Lake is a small town in Grant County, Washington, near the center of the state. Soap Lake is north of Interstate 90.

Bellevue woman in critical condition after roll over car accident

A 29-year-old Bellevue woman was critically injured in a single car rollover accident on Sunday afternoon around 2:00 in the afternoon.

According to a report in the Bellevue Reporter, the woman was driving a Chevy Tracker on the 16200 block of SE Phantom Way when she crashed into a ditch near Lake Hills Park. She was partially ejected from her vehicle and was pinned until she was extricated.

The injured woman was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where she was listed in critical condition on Tuesday.

5 people injured, 1 critically, in Olympia rollover car accident

Alicia G. Schneider, 19, was critically injured in a rollover car accident on State Route 101 around 9:30pm on Sunday.

According to a report in The Olympian, Schenider "failed to negotiate a turn" on the onramp  from Evergreen Parkway and rolled the Chevrolet Aveo she was driving. She was ejected from the vehicle; she was not wearing a seatbelt.

Four of Scheneider's passengers received minor injuries in the car accident including Melissa Kennedy, 32, of Olympia, Barbara Prew, 27 of Rochester, William Wilcox, 37, of Tacoma and Daniel Slaven, 35, of Vancouver.

Schenider, Wilcox and Prew were all taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia.

Man killed in drag racing accident at Washington raceway

Mark Niver, 60, of Phoenix, Arizona was killed in a drag racing accident at Pacific Raceways outside of Seattle in Kent, Washington on Sunday afternoon.

According to a report in The Seattle Times, Niver crashed his car after crossing the finish line during his semifinal heat at the Northwest Nationals on Saturday.

6 injured, 2 seriously in Grant County pickup truck accident

Six people were injured when two pickup trucks collided this afternoon in Grant County.

According to a report in the Yakima Herald.com, Darin E. Clifford, 44, of Tucson, Arizona was driving a 2006 GMC pickup truck south on State Route 17 when he failed to stop at a stop sign at State Route 28 and collided with a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by John J. Heston, 33, of Ephrata.

Clifford was taken to Columbia Basin Hospital in Ephrata for treatment of cuts and bruises. His passenger, Clifford A. Thomas, 15, of Selah suffered serious injures including internal injuries, head injuries and possibly two broken legs. Thomas was taken to Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee.

Heston was taken to Columbia Basin Hospital with neck, back and chest pain. Three passengers in his truck were children ages 5, 7 and 8; they were taken to Columbia Basin hospital for treatment of neck and chest injuries.

The report said that drugs or alcohol were not involved in the accident but Clifford may be cited for negligent driving.

Yelm man injured in motorcycle accident near Cle Elum

Darrell W. Benoschek, 46, of Yelm was taken to Kittitas Valley Community Hospital in Ellensburg with leg and head injuries after he was involved in a motorcycle accident.

The motorcycle occurred as Benoschek was driving his motorcycle east on Interstate 90, eight miles west of Cle Elum, when a flat tire caused him to crash.

Irene E. Beonschek, 43, of Yelm, who was riding with Darrell, was not injured in the motorcycle accident.

5-year-old injured in Tacoma car accident

A 5-year-old child suffered an eye injury in a car accident along the Tacoma waterfront reports Tacoma's The News Tribune.

According to the report by Stacey Mulick, the child was riding in a vehicle along with two adults and another child in the 3300 block of Ruston way around 11:30pm when their vehicle was hit by a suspected drunken driver.

The suspected drunken driver may be charged with vehicular assault and DUI. In Washington state, motor vehicle code RCW 46.51.522 -- Vehicular Assault -- can be charged if a person is seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident and the driver was driving recklessly, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or drving with the regard for the safety of others.

WSP arrests 57 DUI drivers over Fourth of July weekend

Washington State Patrol (WSP) officers working in King County, Pierce County and Snohomish county reported that they arrested 57 impaired drivers over the July 4th holiday weekend.

The WSP made fifty-three arrests during the time period of July 2nd-July 4th and the Bellevue police department made four arrests.

According to the WSP, there was only one fatal motor vehicle accident over the July 4th holiday but it has not been determined whether that accident was alcohol-related.

In Washington state, there are approximately 700 traffic fatalities every year and 45% of these are alcohol-related. However, the rate of drunk driving fatalities has been decreasing because of drunk driver emphasis patrols like the WSP conducted over the 4th of July holiday weekend.

Gig Harbor man dies after motorcycle accident

Renwick Dayton, 44, of Gig Harbor died at a Tacoma hospital after he was involved in a motorcycle accident at 40th Street Northwest and 80th Avenue Northwest in the Artondale area; Artondale is about 3 miles southeast of Gig Harbor.

The Olympian reports that Dayton's motorcycle collided with another vehicle around 12:35pm.

The report did not specify the cause of the motorcycle accident but said that the Pierce County Sheriff's office is investigating.

Woman killed in single-car accident on SR 529 between Everett and Marysville

A 38-year-old woman was killed in a car accident off northbound State Route 529, south of Interstate 5, between Everett and Marysville in the early Monday morning.

The woman was driving a Dodge Durango northbound on State Route 529 when she went off the roadway and struck a pillar according to The Seattle Times. The time of the car accident is estimated to be around 3am.

The Washington State Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident.

SUV hits motorcycle, 2 injured in Seattle accident

Two people on a motorcycle suffered fractures and broken bones when they were hit by an SUV in downtown Seattle early this morning.

According to King5.com, the motorcycle accident occurred at Seventh and Virginia around 3am.

The motorcycle riders were taken to the hospital.

None of the five in the SUV were injured.

A police officer who responded to the accident suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

WSP has issued nearly 670 cell phone violations since primary offense law went into effect

The Washington State Patrol, in a media release, reports that troopers have issued 670 citations to motorists for using hand-held cell phones or for texting between the dates of June 10 and July 1. In addition, the report says that they have issued more than 500 warnings to violators.

State Patrol Chief John Batiste says because there is more compliance with the law, the violators are easier to spot.

Violation of the law, RCW 46.61.668, results in a $124 fine.

Blown tire causes injury accident on I-90 near Ellensburg

Anthony Lundquist, 19, of Sunnyside, was injured in a single-car accident when the rear-tire on his 1996 Ford Aerostar blew and caused him to lose control of his vehicle, causing it to roll reports the Yakima Herald.com.

Lundquist was taken to Kittitas Valley Community Hospital with neck and back injuries. His passenger, Jeremy L. Luther, 14, suffered a leg injury in the accident.

The car accident occurred on Interstate 90 near Ellensburg around 7:45am this morning.
