April 30, 2011 by The Farber Law Group

A motorcycle rider was seriously injured and the condition of the motorcycle passenger is unknown after a Maple Valley motorcycle accident attributed to drunk driving.

Seattle's King5.com reports that the motorcycle accident occurred on Friday evening at 8:30pm on northbound State Route 169 near Southeast 213th Street. The accident occurred when a Jeep, driven by a Kent woman, 32, made an abrupt left turn and hit the motorcyclist who was traveling next to the Jeep.

The motorcyclist and passenger were thrown down an embankment and hit a fire hydrant.

The motorcycle rider was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, a level I trauma center.

The driver of the Jeep was arrested on suspicion of DUI and Vehicular Assault. Vehicular Assault, Washington State vehicle code RCW 46.61.522, can be charged if a person is seriously injured in a motorcycle accident and the driver was driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol or driving with reckless disregard for the safety of others.

Police are asking witnesses of the accident to call Detective Russ Haake at 425-401-7717.

Chehalis woman killed, 6-year-old injured in State Route 508 car accident

April 27, 2011 by The Farber Law Group

Diann M. Harding, 27, died after she was involved in a State Route 508 single-car accident near Chehalis on Monday afternoon around 2:30pm. Harding's six-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries in the car accident.

The Olympian reports that Harding was traveling on State Route 508, 10 miles southeast of Chehalis when she crossed the centerline, went off the roadway and ran into a power pole on the passenger side of the vehicle.

Harding was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the car accident and she died on the way to the hospital. Her passenger was wearing a seat belt at the time.

Police do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the accident. Police are investigating whether a wild animal such as an el or driver distraction were factors in the accident.

It is a tragedy that Harding was not wearing a seat belt because it may have saved her life. Seat belts can save lives in the following ways:

  • Seat belts keep drivers and passengers inside the vehicle
  • Seat belts restraints the body at its strongest parts -- the hips and the shoulders
  • Seat belts spread the force from the collision over the body and keeps the head and upper body away from the dashboard and steering wheel.
  • Seat belts protect from traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries.

1 killed, 4 injured in Highway 18 head-on car accident near Tiger Mountain

April 24, 2011 by The Farber Law Group

Trung Ngo, 36, of Covington was killed in a Highway 18 head-on car accident near Tiger Mountain on Saturday night and his wife, Cheuk Chann, 37, was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with serious injuries. Relatives of the couple said they were on a shopping expedition to purchase Easter candy for their children when the car accident occurred.

The Washington State Patrol are investigating the cause of the car accident but they believe that a vehicle driven by Mine Her, 26, of Pullman and a car driven by Frank J. Willing, 39, of Tacoma were either racing or involved in a case of road rage when Her lost control of his vehicle, crossed the centerline and struck Ngo's vehicle head-on.

Willing lost control of his vehicle after Ngo's and Her's vehicles collided and his car rolled over onto its top.

Willing and his 10-year-old son were both taken to Valley View Medical Center with injuries.

Her's injuries were more serious and he was taken to Harborview Medical Center.

The Washington State Patrol are investigating both Willing Her under suspicion of Vehicular Assault and Vehicular Homicide. Vehicular Assault can be charged if someone is seriously injured in a car accident and Vehicular Homicide can be charged of someone is killed and the negligent driver was driving under the influence of alcohol or driving with reckless regard.

Former Wenatchee City Councilman, cited in 4-car accident, didn't have insurance

April 20, 2011 by The Farber Law Group

The Wenatchee World reports that Steve May, a former Wenatchee City Council member, was at fault in Saturday morning's 4-car accident. It was surprising to learn that May was an uninsured motorist.

May was issued two citations: following too closely and driving without insurance. Police are also awaiting the results of blood toxicology reports.

Thankfully, no one was seriously injured in this accident. However, it is quite surprising that someone so civic minded as to serve on a City Council would fail to obtain car insurance.

If you are involved in a automobile injury accident in Seattle or throughout King County, the odds are that almost one in five drivers are uninsured even though Washington State law requires that all drivers have insurance.

As a Bellevue personal injury attorney, I recommend to all of my clients to always purchase uninsured motorist coverage on their policy. Make sure to have your uninsured motorist limits equal to your liability limits so you are protected if you are involved in an uninsured motorist accident.

3 men critically injured in Seattle hit-and-run car accident

April 16, 2011 by The Farber Law Group

Seattle's KIRO TV.com reports that three men were critically injured in a Seattle car accident on Rainier Avenue South around just before 3am on Saturday morning when the SUV they were riding in collided with a Honda Civic and all three men were thrown from the SUV.

According to the report, police responded to a 911 emergency call and found three critically injured men lying in the middle of the roadway. A wrecked black Honda Civic was on a nearby curb. The driver of the SUV had fled the accident scene. All three injured men were taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Police believe the driver of the SUV crossed the center line and hit the Honda head-on in the 9600 block. The driver of the SUV then fled the accident scene. Police later located the SUV at the Atlantic City boat ramp. They took the driver to Harborview to test for the presence of drugs and alcohol.

The article did not say if the two people in the Honda, both women, were injured in the motor vehicle accident.

Hopefully, the three injured men recover from their injuries. The driver of the SUV faces serious charges including Vehicular Assault and felony hit-and run. Vehicular Assault, RCW 46.61.522, can be charged if someone is seriously injured in a car accidents and the driver was under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

April 12, 2011 by The Farber Law Group

A male bicyclist in his 30s was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with a critical head injury after being hit by a red van that then fled the scene of the bicycle accident.

The Seattle Bike Blog said the accident occurred about 7pm on Monday as the bicyclist was riding northbound in the outside lane in the 2200 block of 1st Avenue and Blanchard Streets in Belltown.

Witnesses described the vehicle that hit the cyclist as a 1990s red minivan. The van was also traveling northbound. Hopefully police will locate the van's driver who could face charges of felony hit-and-run, Washington Vehicle Code RCW 46.52.020.

Approximately two percent of motor vehicle accident deaths are bicyclists. In 2009, there were 630 fatal bicycle accidents and 549 of those were male and 81 were female. In 91% of fatal accidents, the cyclist was not wearing a helmet despite the fact that they reduce head injury risk by 85%. In Washington state there were 7.4 bicycle accident deaths per 100,000 people in 2009.
