Seattle bicyclist killed after being hit by car on Highway 99

Seattle's KOMO News.com reports that John U. Leoni, age 35, of Seattle was killed on Wednesday night in a bicycle accident on Highway 99 in Seattle.

According to the report, the Leoni collided with a car, a Porsche, a little after 10pm in the southbound lanes near the Dexter Avenue exit. The driver of the car, is suspected of driving under the influence at the time of the accident. The driver was taken to the hospital with injuries.

If the driver is determined to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident, he or she could be charged with Vehicular Homicide, RCW 46.61.520. This Washington State statute provides what if a person succumbs to injuries as a result of negligent operation of a motor vehicle, the driver can be charged.

In addition, the family of the person killed as a result of Vehicular Homicide, can bring a suit for wrongful death.

Bellevue man critically injured in Elephant Super Car Wash accident

The Bellevue Reporter reports that a 74-year-old Bellevue man was critically injured in a car and pedestrian accident at the Elephant Super Car Wash located on Bel-Red Road in Bellevue on Monday evening.

According to the article, the man was standing behind his parked Lexus when a car wash employee driving a customer's Ford Expedition, apparently hit the gas pedal instead of the brake and pinned the victim between the two vehicles.

One witness said that the man's legs were "shattered." A car wash customer administered first aid until the medics arrived in about 5 minutes. The man was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where he is listed in critical condition.

Former University of Washington football player sentenced for DUI and hit-and-run accident

Reggie Rogers, age 44, a former University of Washington football star was sentenced to two-years in prison for two drunken driving charges. Rogers, who is from Federal Way, was sentenced in King County District Court on Thursday after entering guilty pleas according to The Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

The DUI charges stem from two DUI arrests in the Fall of 2008. In one of the DUI incidents, Rogers was under the influence when he was involved in a hit-and-run accident .

Rogers has had a history of drunken driving accidents. In 1987 he ran a red light and hit a car, killing three teenagers inside it. He was convicted of negligent homicide in that accident and spent a year in jail.

Drivers sue Washington cities over red light camera traffic fines

The Tacoma News Tribune reports that a class action lawsuit has been filed on behalf of eight plaintiffs against 19 Washington cities saying that fines imposed against motorists who received "red light camera tickets" are excessive.

Washington State law requires infractions caught by the red light cameras to be equal or less than parking tickets. However, the plaintiffs are saying that fines of $101 or more are excessive.

The 19 cities named in the lawsuit include Auburn, Bonney Lake, Bremerton, Burien, Federal Way, Fife, Issaquah, Lacey, Lake Forest Park, Lakewood, Lynnwood, Monroe, Moses Lake, Puyallup, Renton, SeaTac, Seattle, Spokane and Tacoma.

Cities install the red light cameras in school and construction zones and at intersections where there have been multiple car accidents. Anecdotal evidence shows that the cameras have proven to lower motor vehicle accidents at intersections where they have been installed. For example, at one intersection in Lacey, car accidents have been reduced from a high of 21 injury accidents at one intersection to one.

5-year-old boy seriously injured in Yelm highway hit-and-run car accident

A 5-year-old boy was badly injured in a hit-and-run car accident on Yelm Highway in Lacey after the car he was riding in was hit or cut off by another vehicle according to Seattle TV station, King5.com. The car the boy was in rolled across Yelm highway and it went through a fence. The other vehicle left the accident scene.

The boy was airlifted to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center. According to the report, he suffered serious facial injuries. An adult and another child passenger were taken to hospitals local to the accident scene. Their conditions are unknown.

Police arrested the driver of the other vehicle involved in the accident after they found him at a veterinarians office. He reportedly had two dogs in his car at the time of the accident.

Driver injured when car goes over cliff in at Edmonds waterfront

The Seattle Times reports that car went over a 200 foot waterfront cliff in Edmonds on Thursday morning and the fire department had to rescue the injured driver. The injured driver were transferred to a city boat and then airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle via helicopter.

The report said that the single-car accident occurred Thursday morning at Olympic View Drive.

Blewett Pass van accident injures teens

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that a van was involved in a single-car accident on Blewett Pass in the Cascade Range on U.S. 97 injuring five or six people. The van was taking Northwest Youth Corps member from Eugene, Oregon to the Twisp area of north-central Washington to do trail maintenance.

The van accident occurred around 2:30pm on Sunday when the van went off the road and rolled down an embankment.

There were 12 teenagers, whose ages spanned from 16 to 19, and an adult driver inside the van at the time of the accident. All were taken to Kittitas Valley Community Hospital in Ellensburg. The report said five or six people sustained minor injuries.

The cause of the accident is being investigated. The stretch of U.S. 97 between Interstate 90 and Highway 2 tends to be quite windy and often drivers take it too fast.

The Washington State Patrol are asking anyone who might know anything about a fatal pedestrian accident on Interstate 5 in Seattle on May 28th to contact them at (425)401-7717.

In a media release, the Patrol said they are investigating the death of 43-year-old Rebekah J. Woods who was found dead on I-5, north of Holgate Street, in Seattle.

Detectives say Woods was found in the southbound lane. They believe she was killed between 1:00am and 1:30am on May 28th, 2009.

Sammamish woman injured in head-on car accident on Novelty Hill Road near Redmond

The Sammamish Reporter reports that a 56-year-old Sammamish woman was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center after being hit head-on by a suspected drunk driver.

The car accident occurred on Sunday night on Northeast Novelty Hill Road near Redmond. Apparently a 25-year-old Portland woman driving a Jeep Liberty crossed the center line and hit the left front corner of the Lexus driven by the Sammamish woman.

The article said that the Sammamish woman had to be cut from her vehicle. The condition of the Portland woman was not given.

Police believe the driver of the jeep may have been intoxicated at the time of the car accident.

6 children, 2 pregnant mothers injured in I-5 rollover car accident

Seattle's King5.com reports that a SUV carrying six children, two pregnant mothers and one other adult was involved in a roll-over car accident this afternoon on Interstate 5 near DuPont. DuPont is a town about 15 miles south of Tacoma.

The report said that two of the children and one of the pregnant mothers were thrown from the SUV and a 3-year-old boy is in "extremely critical condition" and a 6-year-old girl is in "critical condition." No one in the SUV was wearing a seat belt or proper restraint at the time of the accident.

According to the report the SUV, a Ford Expedition, was driving south on I-5 at Moats Road when it was sideswiped by a Honda Civic. The Expedition hit the concrete median, rolled over and down an embankment into the northbound lane of traffic.

The driver of the Civic may be charged with vehicular assault because troopers believe that drugs may have been a factor in the accident.

The driver of the SUV was responsible for making sure that all children under the age of 16 were properly restrained. The driver may be cited for failing to adhere to Washington State's seat belt law. Vehicle code RCW 46.61.688 requires that safety belts be used.

Lacey red light cameras reduces accidents at one intersection

The city of Lacey installed a red-light camera at the corner of Pacific Avenue and Sleater-Kinney Road on June 1st, 2008. Lacey was the first city in Thurston County to install the cameras which enable police to cite drivers who run red lights.

Accident data has been compiled and it shows that the red-light cameras have been effective in reducing the number of car accidents at the intersection where they were installed. Since the camera was installed in June of 2008, there has only been one accident at the intersection. When comparing that car accident statistic with previous years, the cause-and-effect are apparent. In 2006, there were 16 car accidents at that intersection; in 2007, there were 21 car accidents; and in 2008, there were 18 car accidents including seven injury-accidents.

Lacey police have issued 4,067 red-light tickets since the cameras were installed. The fine for running a red-light is $124. In 2009, the police are issuing fewer tickets as driver behavior seem to have changed and fewer people are running red lights.

Now that the red-light camera statistics are available, other cities in Thurston County -- including Olympia -- are considering installing the cameras at intersections where there have been a lot of collisions.

Issaquah man killed in rollover car accident

Seattle's KOMO News.com reports that an Issaquah man was killed in a car accident when his SUV went off of the road and roller.

According to the report, the single-car accident occurred near 10100 block of Issaquah Hobart Road in Issaquah a little before midnight on Friday.

Police did not identify the man but said he was 27 years old. There were no passengers in his vehicle at the time of the accident. Police believe he may have been driving under the influence.

Sammamish car accident causes gas leak, requires evacuation of homes

An 18-year-old Sammamish man has been cited for inattentive driving after his car veered off of the road and hit a Remote Transmitting Unit operated by Puget Sound Energy reports The Sammamish Reporter. The car accident caused a minor gas leak and several homes were evacuated because of a small chance that there might be an explosion.

The single-car accident occurred on 248th Avenue Southeast near Southeast 17th street in Sammamish on Monday night. Neither the young man or his passenger were injured in the accident.

One resident believes the that the city's maintenance of the road is a problem. Jim McGraw said, “The city, through strong-arm tactics, has taken over the road, but refuses to fix it.”

Patrol arrests man on vehicular assault warrant after DUI car accident

The Washington State Patrol announced they have arrested a Des Moines man they have been looking since he failed to show up in court to faces charges of vehicular assault after a November 2007 car accident.

The Patrol arrested Duane R. Stewart, age 50, after he drove off the road and hit a tree off of State Route 167 in Kent on June 1st. Stewart was driving with a suspended license and was under the influence of drugs at the time of this single-car accident. After he was treated for his injuries he was booked into King County Jail to face his outstanding warrants and felony charge.

Back on November 3, 2007, Stewart was driving westbound on Interstate 90 when he drove off the road and hit a tree. His 25-year-old passenger was seriously injured in that car accident. Because he was driving under the influence and recklessly at the time, he was charged with vehicular assault.

Seattle motorcyclist seriously injured after rear-ending ambulance on I-5

A 30-year-old Seattle man is in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after a motorcycle accident in which he crashed into the back a stopped ambulance on Interstate 5 near Northgate reports a Washington State patrol media release.

The motorcycle accident occurred after 6:30 am. Earlier in the morning, there had been several minor injury car accidents on the I-5. The American Medical Response (AMR) ambulance was at the scene of one of the previous accidents and stopped when the motorcyclist ran into it.

An Emergency Medical Technician barely escaped serious injury when the ambulance was hit. The report said that she suffered a hand injury.

According to the report, the cause of the motorcycle accident was most likely inattention on the motorcyclist's part. The ambulance was in the HOV lane with its lights on when it was rear-ended.
