Seattle's KOMO News.com reports that John U. Leoni, age 35, of Seattle was killed on Wednesday night in a bicycle accident on Highway 99 in Seattle.

According to the report, the Leoni collided with a car, a Porsche, a little after 10pm in the southbound lanes near the Dexter Avenue exit. The driver of the car, is suspected of driving under the influence at the time of the accident. The driver was taken to the hospital with injuries.

If the driver is determined to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident, he or she could be charged with Vehicular Homicide, RCW 46.61.520. This Washington State statute provides what if a person succumbs to injuries as a result of negligent operation of a motor vehicle, the driver can be charged.

In addition, the family of the person killed as a result of Vehicular Homicide, can bring a suit for wrongful death.

The Bellevue Reporter reports that a 74-year-old Bellevue man was critically injured in a car and pedestrian accident at the Elephant Super Car Wash located on Bel-Red Road in Bellevue on Monday evening.

According to the article, the man was standing behind his parked Lexus when a car wash employee driving a customer's Ford Expedition, apparently hit the gas pedal instead of the brake and pinned the victim between the two vehicles.

One witness said that the man's legs were "shattered." A car wash customer administered first aid until the medics arrived in about 5 minutes. The man was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where he is listed in critical condition.

Reggie Rogers, age 44, a former University of Washington football star was sentenced to two-years in prison for two drunken driving charges. Rogers, who is from Federal Way, was sentenced in King County District Court on Thursday after entering guilty pleas according to The Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

The DUI charges stem from two DUI arrests in the Fall of 2008. In one of the DUI incidents, Rogers was under the influence when he was involved in a hit-and-run accident .

Rogers has had a history of drunken driving accidents. In 1987 he ran a red light and hit a car, killing three teenagers inside it. He was convicted of negligent homicide in that accident and spent a year in jail.

The Tacoma News Tribune reports that a class action lawsuit has been filed on behalf of eight plaintiffs against 19 Washington cities saying that fines imposed against motorists who received "red light camera tickets" are excessive.

Washington State law requires infractions caught by the red light cameras to be equal or less than parking tickets. However, the plaintiffs are saying that fines of $101 or more are excessive.

The 19 cities named in the lawsuit include Auburn, Bonney Lake, Bremerton, Burien, Federal Way, Fife, Issaquah, Lacey, Lake Forest Park, Lakewood, Lynnwood, Monroe, Moses Lake, Puyallup, Renton, SeaTac, Seattle, Spokane and Tacoma.

Cities install the red light cameras in school and construction zones and at intersections where there have been multiple car accidents. Anecdotal evidence shows that the cameras have proven to lower motor vehicle accidents at intersections where they have been installed. For example, at one intersection in Lacey, car accidents have been reduced from a high of 21 injury accidents at one intersection to one.

A 5-year-old boy was badly injured in a hit-and-run car accident on Yelm Highway in Lacey after the car he was riding in was hit or cut off by another vehicle according to Seattle TV station, King5.com. The car the boy was in rolled across Yelm highway and it went through a fence. The other vehicle left the accident scene.

The boy was airlifted to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center. According to the report, he suffered serious facial injuries. An adult and another child passenger were taken to hospitals local to the accident scene. Their conditions are unknown.

Police arrested the driver of the other vehicle involved in the accident after they found him at a veterinarians office. He reportedly had two dogs in his car at the time of the accident.

The Seattle Times reports that car went over a 200 foot waterfront cliff in Edmonds on Thursday morning and the fire department had to rescue the injured driver. The injured driver were transferred to a city boat and then airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle via helicopter.

The report said that the single-car accident occurred Thursday morning at Olympic View Drive.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that a van was involved in a single-car accident on Blewett Pass in the Cascade Range on U.S. 97 injuring five or six people. The van was taking Northwest Youth Corps member from Eugene, Oregon to the Twisp area of north-central Washington to do trail maintenance.

The van accident occurred around 2:30pm on Sunday when the van went off the road and rolled down an embankment.

There were 12 teenagers, whose ages spanned from 16 to 19, and an adult driver inside the van at the time of the accident. All were taken to Kittitas Valley Community Hospital in Ellensburg. The report said five or six people sustained minor injuries.

The cause of the accident is being investigated. The stretch of U.S. 97 between Interstate 90 and Highway 2 tends to be quite windy and often drivers take it too fast.

The Sammamish Reporter reports that a 56-year-old Sammamish woman was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center after being hit head-on by a suspected drunk driver.

The car accident occurred on Sunday night on Northeast Novelty Hill Road near Redmond. Apparently a 25-year-old Portland woman driving a Jeep Liberty crossed the center line and hit the left front corner of the Lexus driven by the Sammamish woman.

The article said that the Sammamish woman had to be cut from her vehicle. The condition of the Portland woman was not given.

Police believe the driver of the jeep may have been intoxicated at the time of the car accident.

The city of Lacey installed a red-light camera at the corner of Pacific Avenue and Sleater-Kinney Road on June 1st, 2008. Lacey was the first city in Thurston County to install the cameras which enable police to cite drivers who run red lights.

Accident data has been compiled and it shows that the red-light cameras have been effective in reducing the number of car accidents at the intersection where they were installed. Since the camera was installed in June of 2008, there has only been one accident at the intersection. When comparing that car accident statistic with previous years, the cause-and-effect are apparent. In 2006, there were 16 car accidents at that intersection; in 2007, there were 21 car accidents; and in 2008, there were 18 car accidents including seven injury-accidents.

Lacey police have issued 4,067 red-light tickets since the cameras were installed. The fine for running a red-light is $124. In 2009, the police are issuing fewer tickets as driver behavior seem to have changed and fewer people are running red lights.

Now that the red-light camera statistics are available, other cities in Thurston County -- including Olympia -- are considering installing the cameras at intersections where there have been a lot of collisions.

Seattle's KOMO News.com reports that an Issaquah man was killed in a car accident when his SUV went off of the road and roller.

According to the report, the single-car accident occurred near 10100 block of Issaquah Hobart Road in Issaquah a little before midnight on Friday.

Police did not identify the man but said he was 27 years old. There were no passengers in his vehicle at the time of the accident. Police believe he may have been driving under the influence.

An 18-year-old Sammamish man has been cited for inattentive driving after his car veered off of the road and hit a Remote Transmitting Unit operated by Puget Sound Energy reports The Sammamish Reporter. The car accident caused a minor gas leak and several homes were evacuated because of a small chance that there might be an explosion.

The single-car accident occurred on 248th Avenue Southeast near Southeast 17th street in Sammamish on Monday night. Neither the young man or his passenger were injured in the accident.

One resident believes the that the city's maintenance of the road is a problem. Jim McGraw said, “The city, through strong-arm tactics, has taken over the road, but refuses to fix it.”

The Washington State Patrol announced they have arrested a Des Moines man they have been looking since he failed to show up in court to faces charges of vehicular assault after a November 2007 car accident.

The Patrol arrested Duane R. Stewart, age 50, after he drove off the road and hit a tree off of State Route 167 in Kent on June 1st. Stewart was driving with a suspended license and was under the influence of drugs at the time of this single-car accident. After he was treated for his injuries he was booked into King County Jail to face his outstanding warrants and felony charge.

Back on November 3, 2007, Stewart was driving westbound on Interstate 90 when he drove off the road and hit a tree. His 25-year-old passenger was seriously injured in that car accident. Because he was driving under the influence and recklessly at the time, he was charged with vehicular assault.

A 30-year-old Seattle man is in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after a motorcycle accident in which he crashed into the back a stopped ambulance on Interstate 5 near Northgate reports a Washington State patrol media release.

The motorcycle accident occurred after 6:30 am. Earlier in the morning, there had been several minor injury car accidents on the I-5. The American Medical Response (AMR) ambulance was at the scene of one of the previous accidents and stopped when the motorcyclist ran into it.

An Emergency Medical Technician barely escaped serious injury when the ambulance was hit. The report said that she suffered a hand injury.

According to the report, the cause of the motorcycle accident was most likely inattention on the motorcyclist's part. The ambulance was in the HOV lane with its lights on when it was rear-ended.

The month of June is prom season with Bellevue School District proms being held next weekend. Prom season is a dangerous time for teenage drivers. The Tacoma News Tribune reports that A 23-year-old Tenino man was killed in a single-car accident in Thurston County on Saturday evening.

According to the report, Bryant E. Yale was driving his Honda Accord southbound on Johnson Creek road when he crossed the road and ran into a tree. His passenger, a 22-year-old Tenino man was injured and taken to St. Peter's Hospital in Olympia.

Police that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the accident.

The Wenatchee World reports that a 16-year-old girl caused a rear-end car accident when she hit a car stopped at a light because she was text messaging at the time.

According to the report, the teenager was driving on Western in Wenatchee after 4pm when she rear-ended the stopped car which then was pushed into the stopped car in front of it.

The teenage driver and her 15-year-old passenger were both taken to Central Washington Hospital complaining of neck pain. The car that was rear-ended contained two teens, a 16-year-old driver and a 17-year-old passenger, and they both went to the hospital complaining of neck pain. The driver of the 3rd car was not injured.

Police will cite the teen for following too closely and driving with a passenger that was not a sibling which is in violation of the teen's intermediary driver's license. The police are not going to cite her for RCW 46.61.668 even though she told witnesses that she was texting at the time of the accident.

People who are involved in car accidents, especially a rear-end accident, often complain of neck pain. The common term for this is "whiplash" which describes a hyperflexion/hyperextension injury or a cervical strain/sprain. Often this is a painful injury which requires treatment using ice and heat and physical therapy. If the injury lasts more than 10 days, the condition may be more serious and require a specialist.

It is curious as to why the police did not cite the teenage driver with RCW 46.61.668 which prohibits "Sending, Reading, or Writing a Text Message While Driving." This vehicle code can impose a $101 fine.

The Washington State Patrol (WSP) announced the results of their King County "emphasis patrols" over the Memorial Day weekend. We reported last week that the WSP was to add 25 troopers to the King County highways over the Memorial weekend. The good news is that there were not car accident fatalities and no serious car accidents over the three day weekend.

The results of the emphasis patrols, which targeted drunk drivers and speed violators, was successful reports the WSP. Results showed that:

• No car accident fatalities over the weekend
  
• No serious injury accidents
  
• 66 driving under the influence drivers were arrested
  
• 78 car accidents resulted in 19 injuries

• stopped 107 cars for speeding
  
• made 2 driving under the influence arrests

The Tacoma News Tribune reports that Lakewood Motorcycle police officer was seriously injured in a motorcycle-car-accident on Steilacoom Boulevard on Wednesday morning. Lakewood is a city south of Tacoma.

According to the report, the officer was headed westbound on Steilacoom Boulevard when a car driven by a woman in her 80's pulled out of a driveway in front of him. The officer did not have time to stop and he crashed into the side of the woman's car.

The driver of the car suffered minor injuries.

A man who crashed his Porsche into the Puget Sound in Seattle's Alki neighborhood was taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment.

The car accident occurred around 2:15am when the man was apparently speeding his Porsche and accidentally jumped a curb, crashing it into a utility pole and ending up in the water.

The man, who was reported to be in his 50's, was able to escape the sinking car and pulled himself onto some rocks.

The car was pulled out of the Sound by a tow truck.

A 22-year-old Lacey woman, Natalie J. McLaughlin, was tragically killed early Sunday morning when the car she was driving was involved in a head-on car accident on Highway 12 near Rochester. Rochester is about 25 miles south of Olympia, the state capitol.

According to a report in The Seattle Times, McLaughlin was driving her Chevrolet Aveo eastbound near Forstrom Road when a car driven by David W. Comfort, age 27, of Chehalis crossed the center line and hit her head-on.

McLaughlin was pronounced dead at the accident scene. Comfort was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment. He will likely be charged with Vehicular Homicide.

Vehicular Homicide, statute RCW 46.61.520, can be charged if someone dies in a car accident and a driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving recklessly or driving without regard to the safety of others.

In addition to criminal charges, the family of the deceased may sue the driver under Washington's wrongful death statute which allows the family of a deceased loved one to file a suit against a person whose negligent or criminal act caused a family member's death.

A Renton man, Anthony T. McDonald, age 33, was thrown from his Jeep Cherokee and killed in a car accident Sunday morning around 3:30am when his Jeep went off of Highway 7 near Highway 512. McDonald's body was found 150 feet away from his Jeep. Parkland, Washington is about 10 miles south of Tacoma.

According to a report in The Seattle Times, McDonald was probably speeding when his vehicle left the road. His Jeep flipped over and landed onto top of cars at the Parkland Chevrolet car lot. Approximately10 late-model used cars were damaged and damage estimates are between $200-$400 thousand dollars.

The Auburn Police are investigating a head-on car accident in which one man was killed and three people were injured, one critically reports the Tacoma News Tribune.

The car accident occurred after 8pm on Tuesday evening in the 5500 block of A Street Southeast in Auburn. Killed in the accident was a 20-year-old man. One person was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with critical injuries. Two other injured were taken to Auburn Regional Medical Center.

The Washington State Patrol, in a media release, announced that the National Safety Council reports that deaths attributed to car accidents are down significantly in the first three months of 2009.

In January through March of 2008, there were 108 people killed in car accidents in Washington State. During the same three months of this year, there were only 91. This is a 17% reduction in the number of people killed.

Authorities believe the following factors have lowered the car accident death rate:

• Road design w/ safety in mind
  
• Rapid response of emergency medical services
  
• Safety devices installed on later model cars including air bags and anti-lock brakes
  
• Higher rate of seat belt compliance
• Greater public awareness of the effects of drunken driving

Today is the first day of "All American Buckle-Up Week". This is an event in which law enforcement agencies throughout the United States join together to encourage seat belt use to reduce car accident injuries and fatalities.

According to a press release issued by the Washington State Patrol, troopers will be especially vigilant targeting drivers who violate seat belt laws, drivers who are speeding, drivers who are driving aggressively and drivers who are intoxicated.

According to statistics, Washington State has one of the highest seat belt compliance rate in the United States. Wearing seat belts and having children in the proper booster seats, car seats and restraints are the most effective way that drivers can reduce serious injuries and fatalities in car accidents.

The Washington State Patrol issued a press release regarding three fatal motor vehicle accidents in Spokane & Pend Oreille counties between May 10-May 13. Those killed were:

• Nehalah May, age 9, who was killed on May 10th on SR-195 at Meadow Lane.
  
• Nolan Lewis, age 82, who was killed on May 11th on SR-20, 17 miles north of Cusick.
  
• Alexandra Phillips, age 19, who was killed on May 13th on I-90 at the Idaho state line.

Laws regarding using hand held cell phones while driving are already in place in Washington, California, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, District of Columbia and Utah. In Utah, they call the offense "careless driving."

Maryland has become the 11th state to ban "texting" -- text messaging -- while driving according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Texting is already banned in 10 states.

In Washington State, the use of a cell phone while driving, including texting, is considered a secondary offense. Drivers will not be ticketed by police for using a cell phone unless they are also stopped for another offense.

The Seattle Times reports that a passerby spotted the wreckage of a car accident off the road near Monroe and called 911 around 7am this morning. Police found an 18-year-old Sultan man dead in the wreckage.

According to the report, the man apparently went off of Woods Lake Road and hit a tree sometime during the night or in the early morning hours.

Police believe that speed may have been a factor in the car accident.

A 19-year-old woman was killed and several other people were critically injured in a car accident near Puyallup and the accident impact was so powerful that the woman's car split in half and half the car went into the Puyallup river.

The fatal car accident occurred early Thursday morning around 5:30am when the 19-year-old woman lost control of her car while driving northbound on Highway 167 near Gay road and hit an oncoming car.

A 14-year-old passenger in the woman's car was injured and is being treated at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma; her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. The Washington State Patrol found another woman down-river and believe she may have been a passenger in the car that split apart. Details of her condition are unknown.

The 20-year-old driver of the car that was hit received critical injuries in the accident and was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

A driver of a third car than ran into the accident suffered minor injuries. A fourth car was damaged by flying debris but its driver was not injured.

Washington State Patrol believe alcohol and speed may have been factors in the accident which they are investigating.

A Hundai Elantra was involved in a car accident on North Wenatchee Avenue in Wenatchee and the force of impact was so severe that the Hyundai completely flipped, landing on its wheels according to a report in The Wenatchee World.

The two-car accident occurred around 6pm in front of Igloo Tavern. The driver of the Hyundai said he was not injured but he was taken to the hospital as a precaution. The driver of the other car, a Subaru Forester, was not injured. The Forester suffered front-end damage.

It is hard to imagine a car accident so severe that a car flipped and no injuries. It is a safe bet to say that both drivers were probably wearing seat belts.

A man is under investigation for drunken driving and Vehicular Homicide after running a red-light and running into the passenger side of a Honda, killing a Sedro-Woolley woman and her unborn baby reports The Seattle Times.

The accident occurred around 10pm on Monday evening on State Route 20. The Honda, with the pregnant woman's fiancé driving, was headed eastbound on SR20 when a Ford Taurus driven by a Concrete man ran a red light at West Ferry Street in Sedro-Wooley and t-boned the Honda. The passenger side of the Honda was pushed in 12 to 15 inches.

The woman's fiancé suffered minor injuries in the accident. The suspected drunk driver and his female passenger also suffered minor injuries.

Vehicular Homicide can be charged if a person was driving under the influence, driving recklessly or driving without regard to the safety of others and someone is killed in an accident. In Washington State the legal limit for drunk driving is 0.08%.

In addition to criminal charges, the family of the deceased may recover damages in a wrongful death civil suit. Wrongful death suits are brought on behalf of the deceased by a spouse, child or parent.

Seattle's King5.com reports that a 5-year-old boy was killed this afternoon in Gold Bar, Washington when the Dodge Durango SUV he was riding in left the road and hit a tree. The accident occurred in the 44000 block of Fir Road.

Injured in the accident was the driver, a 27-year-old man and a 3-year-old girl. The man was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where he was being treated for facial and back injuries.

The little girl was first taken to an Everett hospital but then she was airlifted to Harborview. The extent of her injuries are unknown.

We just read a report issued by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety which studied how installation of monitoring devices improves driving in teenagers between 16 and 19 years of age. The study monitored devices which reported risky driving practices including:

• failure to use seat belts
  
• sudden braking
  
• sudden acceleration
  
• speeding

Seat belt use was already high among the teeen age drivers but improved significantly when seat belt violations were reported to the parent web-sites and improved even more when in-vehicle alerts sounded. Teenagers in the groups where parents were notified of unsafe behaviors or when an alert sounded also reduced sudden braking/accelerations.

The study concluded that electronic monitoring of teenage drivers reduced incidents of risky behaviors, especially seat belt non-use.

After reading the article, we were wondering if insurance companies might reduce the rates of teenagers whose families install the device. Nevertheless, we are pleased that such a device may reduce the risk of car accidents which seriously injure and kill teens every year.

A Superior Court Judge has sentenced Michael David Vaudrin,age 28 of Spanaway, to two years, 10 months in prison for the drunk driving car accident that killed Robert Adam Hawkins, age 51. Hawkins was a retired Army veteran and a devoted family man.

Vaudrin plead guilty to one count of Vehicular Homicide reports Tacoma's The News Tribune.

According to the report, Vaudrin was drunk when he ran a red light and hit Hawkins' car.

Vehicular Homicide, RCW 46.61.520, can be charged if a person dies and the operator of the motor vehicle was driving under the influence, driving recklessly or without regard to the safety of others. In Washington State, the blood alcohol content (BAC) for drunk driving is .08%.

The Seattle Times reports that a 56-year-old Renton woman was killed on Sunday evening when a pickup truck driven by a 21-year-old man crossed the center line and hit the car she was riding.

According to the report, the car accident occurred around 6pm on Sunday evening on 108th Avenue Southeast near 190th Street in Renton. The pickup truck was heading north on 108th, crossed the center line and struck a car in which the Renton woman was a passenger and then hit another car.

The drivers of all three vehicles were injured but their injuries were said to be non-life threatening.

The pickup driver was booked into the Renton Jail. Police are investigating him and he may be charged with Vehicular Homicide and Vehicular Assault. Police believe excessive speed and alcohol may have been factors in the accident.

Vehicular Homicide can be charged if someone dies as a result of a driver driving under the influence, driving recklessly and driving without regard to the safety of others.

A Buena, Washington man, Kelly Leroy York, has plead guilt to felony charges including fatal hit-and-run, vehicular homicide and vehicular assault in the Thanksgiving-day car accident that killed Rose H. Magana, age 37, of El Mirage Arizona. Five other people were injured in the accident.

York, age 24, entered guilty pleas in Yakima County Superior Court to all charges against him. He will be sentenced on May 13 and could spend up to 10 years in prison reports Seattle's KOMONews.com.

The car accident occurred on Thanksgiving day around 5:00pm at the intersection of Branch and Wierman Road near Toppenish, Washington. Police believe York ran a stop sign. He broadsided a Nissan Sentra. Magana was a passenger in the Nissan. The 17-year-old driver of the Nissan and four other young people were injured.

York and a passenger fled the scene of the accident on foot and York not not arrested until December 2nd.

Vehicular Homicide can be charged if a driver was driving recklessly, driving under the influence or driving without regard to the safety of others. Vehicular Assault can be charged if a person is seriously injured and the driver of the car was impaired or driving recklessly.

A Port Angeles woman, Lisa Marie Bird, age 46, was killed in a single car accident after she lost control of her SUV and rolled it off State Route 101 near the Elwha River reports the Washington State Patrol (WSP).

According to the report, the car accident occurred around 3:00pm on Thursday afternoon. A WSP officer noticed Bird driving erratically and noticed that one rear tire was flat and rolling on a bare rim. The officer followed Bird, who was driving around 90+ MPH, with lights and sirens on but she failed to pullover. Around milepost 241, she lost control of her vehicle, went over the center line and rolled the car 200 foot down an embankment.

Bird was pronounced dead at the car accident scene.

The Patrol is investigating whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident. Bird was wearing her seat belt. They believe she may have been involved in a domestic dispute shortly before getting into her car.

Two city vans with Spokane elementary students aboard collided on Thursday morning, leaving one adult and 14 children with minor injuries.

The van accident occurred when the two vans were headed to the Regal and Logan elementary schools from the Northeast Youth Center shortly before 9 am. The first van stopped suddenly and the second van rear-ended it. The second driver was cited for following too closely.

According to a report in The Seattle Times, the children suffered mostly "bumps and bruises" and the most serious injury was a cut in the cheek requiring stitches. The children, ages 5 to 12 years of age were all wearing seat belts and the van had booster seat.

The Washington State Patrol reports that one brother was seriously injured and one was killed in a very tragic single-car accident in Mason County, 14 miles north of Shelton.

According to the report, 16-year-old Joshua McGuire of Allyn went off the road on State Route 3, south of Allyn and struck a utility pole around 9:25am. Joshua received serious head injuries and a broken neck in the accident; he was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Joshua's brother, 14-year-old Jordan McGuire, was seated in the front passenger seat and was killed in the car accident.

The WSP do not believe that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the accident and said the boys were on route to school at the time of the accident.

The Seattle Times published a report today about the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests of some of the mini/micro/smart cars on the market today. Crash test results studies showed that drivers of the micro vehicles face a much higher rate of serious leg and head injuries in front-end car accidents with larger vehicles than people riding in cars often twice as heavy.

The IISHS tested the following cars:

• Smart "fortwo"
  
• Honda Fit
  
• Toyota Yaris

In a auto accident involving the Smart fortwo and the Mercedes C class, the Smart car "went airborne and turned around 450 degrees after striking the C class," reports The Times. The Mercedes came out of the accident relatively unscathed but the fortwo suffered extensive front-end damage and its driver would have received serious injuries.

With higher gasoline prices, many Washington state residents are purchasing the micro cars but one wonders if the trade-off is worth it when it comes to safety in serious accidents.

The National Insurance Crime Bureauu (NICB) reports that car thefts are down 25% in Washington. The bad news is that the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma metropolitan area rank #26 in the nation for the most car thefts per inhabitants.

In Washington state, Yakima ranks the worst and the third worst in the nation with an average of 779.32 thefts per 100,000 people. In 2008, there were 1,828 car thefts in the Yakima area.

The Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue are had 17,561 auto thefts in 2008 which average 525.02 per 100,000 inhabitants. In 2007, there were 24,516 auto thefts in our area and in 2006 there were 31,231 thefts.

Bordering states with Mexico including El Paso and Laredo continue to have the highest rate of car thefts.

A driver who was text messaging (also known as "texting") while driving over 60 miles per hour crashed into the back end of a Boise patrol car on Interstate 84 in Meridian, Idaho reports Seattle's KOMO TV News Station.

Luckily, the patrol car was empty at the time of impact but the driver suffered injuries and was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Meridian for treatment. The injured motorist is a 37-year-old Nampa man. He had been drinking but his blood alcohol limit (BAC) was under the legal limit.

The motor vehicle accident occurred around 10:15 pm when three Boise patrol cars were stopped alongside the road, arresting another motorist for driving under the influence.

Police credit department policies, which had the three patrol cars parked at a distance from one another and the police had the suspect DUI driver off to the side of road, for preventing further injury.

The distracted driver has not been charged at this time. Washington State Vehicle Code has several statutes which provide penalties for sending, reading or writing a text message while driving (RCW 46.61.668) or using a cell phone that is not hands-free while driving (RCW 46.61.667).

The Tacoma News Tribune reports that a man was killed when his pickup truck was hit by an Army Stryker vehicle on Highway 507 near Spanaway. Killed in the motor vehicle accident was Gregory G. Wood, age 55. Spanaway is a city located approximately 10 miles south of Tacoma.

According to the Washington State Patrol, two Fort Lewis Stryker vehicle turned onto Highway 507 from Eighth Avenue South around 4:40pm. The second vehicle hit Wood's truck, demolishing it and killing Wood.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced some great news: highway traffic accident fatalities are at their lowest level since 1961. The fatality rate -- the number of deaths per 100 million vehicle miles -- is the lowest on record at 1.28. Another positive statistics is seat belt usage continues to rise and Washington is one of the top states with 96.5% seat belt use.

According to the Washington State Department of Transportation web-site, studded tires must be removed from all motor vehicles by April 1st.

As I sit and write this, it is snowing in the greater Seattle area but the law is the law and studded tires must be removed. According to the WSDOT, both Washington and Oregon has an April 1 deadline for studded tires.

Washington State Patrol troopers will write a ticket which has a $124 fine for anyone caught with studded tires after the deadline. People driving on studded tires are easy for the WSP patrol to find as there is a distinctive sound of tires on pavements, and of course, there are the sparks at night time.

An Edmonds man, John Woods, age 65, narrowly missed injury when a steel rod came loose from a vehicle and impaled Wood's windshield.

The lost load accident occurred on south bound Interstate 5 at Boeing Field reports a Washington State Patrol media release. The Patrol is investigating this accident and several other cases of lost loads.

Washington State Vehicle Code RCW 46.61.655 is a statute which covers lost or unsecured loads. It prescribes fines of from $216 to 5,000 and possible jail time if a person is injured or killed due to a lost load.

The SeattlePI.com reports that a 26-year-old Spanaway man, Ryan D. Allen, was killed on Saturday morning after he crashed his speeding truck on State Route 512 in Puyallup. Witnesses say he may have been traveling at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour when he ran his 2005 Dodge Ram truck off the road.

The car accident occurred around 2am. The report said that the truck careened across all lanes of traffic, through a guardrail and rolled a couple of times before bursting into flames. Allen was ejected and was killed. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Police are investigating the accident cause but they believe alcohol was a factor.

How do doctors diagnosis a Whiplash Injury after a car accident? A diagnosis is made by obtaining a patient histroy, performing a head and neck exam and taking x-rays to rule out other conditions or injuries such as bone fractures.

Accident victims with possible neck, back or brain injuries are transported from the accident scene,with a cervical collar in place around your neck to insure your head and neck remain immobile while you are being transported.

Once you arrive to the hospital, x-rays will be taken if you have muscle weakness, soreness in the back of your neck, or if your consciousness seems impaired.

The physician will conduct tests to to determine if your spinal cord is damaged by testing the physical strength of your limbs, sensation to touch in various areas of your body and checking your reflexes.

If your x-rays are normal, you may not be required to wear a cervical collar. However, if it appears that there may be a serious injury or fracture, a CT Scan or MRI may be required.

The Federal Way Police Chief, Brian J. Wilson, was in a minor car accident in his unmarked police car because he was checking his BlackBerry device at the time reports The Seattle Times.

The car accident occurred at the intersection of South 324th Street and Pacific Highway South in Federal Way on March 18. Pacific Highway South is part of State Route 99.

According to the article, Wilson was stopped at a red light when he checked his BlackBerry. Due to driver distraction, he let off the brake and hit the car stopped ahead of him. There was no damage or injuries.

Wilson was given a verbal reprimand and has issued an apology. He will not be ticketed or reprimanded due to a city policy which does not hold officers responsible for accidents with less than $700 in damage. This has incensed many who believe that the Washington State Law forbidding the text messaging while driving should apply to everyone, though there is an exemption for emergency vehicles.

Driver distraction is estimated to cause 25-30 percent of all police-reported car accidents which means 1.2 million accidents a year. Cell phone usage and text messaging has been an increasing problems in the past five years. Last year, Washington State enacted two vehicle codes which regulates using a wireless communications device while driving (RCW 46.61.667) and sending, reading or writing a text message while driving (RCW 46.61.668).

A 16-year-old Redmond girl is in critical condition after crashing her car into a school bus on Tuesday afternoon reports KOMONews.com. The teenager was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. People writing in on the KOMONews comments said the teenager was a Redmond High School student.

The motor vehicle accident occurred in the 4500 block of Sahalee Way Northeast in unincorporated King County after the girl crossed the center line and hit a Lake Washington District school bus head-on. The bus driver, age 46, of Lake Stevens, was not injured and there were no student passengers at the time of the accident.

Police say it is unclear why the girl lost control of her car. She may have had some type of distraction. Photos of her car showed it severely damaged and nearly broken in half. The bus sustained front-end damage on the driver's side.

In an effort to avoid a avoid a car accident, a Snohomish County sheriff's deputy swerved and ran his cruiser through a fence and into an apartment building. The accident occurred on 112th Street SW between 2nd Place W and 3rd Avenue, W in Everett around 5:40am reports the Everett HeraldNet.com.

According to a sheriff's spokeswoman, Rebecca Hover, the deputy had been responding to reports of a stolen car and was driving with lights flashing when another car pulled into the intersection.

The article did not say whether the deputy was injured in the car accident but it did report that the patrol car was a total loss and the apartment building was damaged.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that a University of Washington senior, Celia Kelly, was killed in a head-on car accident in New Zealand. Two other students, Marie Salmi and Jessica Gowen, were seriously injured in the collision.

The students had been studying and performing scientific experiments on UW's research ship, RV Thomas V. Thompson on an oceanography cruise. The students were onshore doing some sight seeing when they were involved in a car accident on State Highway in Maroa, New Zealand.

In addition to her studies at the University of Washington, someone posted on the P-I blog that Kelly had been a Seattle Aquarium volunteer.

If you have a teenage driver, you might want to read U.S. News & World Reports ranking of The 5 Most Dangerous Cars for Teens. Using crash test results by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and by looking at what automotive experts have written about today's popular cars, US News created a short list of cars that they would not recommend parents purchase for young drivers.

Every year between 5,000 and 6,000 teenage drivers are killed in automobile accidents. In fact, car accidents are the leading cause of death among teenagers. Given those statistics, it's great to have the U.S. News report. What I like about their report is that they provide an alternative to each car they pan that is safer but still delivers the same cachet for the teen driver.

List of Dangerous Cars for Teenagers:

• Smart Fortwo --has poor safety data, especially in side crashes. A safer alternative is the Mini Cooper.
  
• Volkswagen New Beetle -- has blind spots and poor side impact crash results. A safer alternative is the VW Rabbit.
  
• Mitsubishi Eclipse -- looks sporty but it has poor visibility and blind spots. A safer alternative is the Scion tC.
  
• Jeep Wrangler -- has marginal scores in side impact crashes and performs mediocre in rollover tests. A safer alternative is the Honda CR-V.

A night time snowmobiling accident killed a first-time snowmobiler when the snowmobiler ran into some trees at a high rate of speed on Lake Cle Elum. The man, John Safka, age 42, of Seattle suffered head, neck and chest injuries in the snowmobile accident.

The Seattle Times reports that the accident occurred around 10:30pm on Friday night. Safka was taken to Kittitas Valley Community Hospital in Ellensburg but he was pronounced dead.

A wrong-way driver killed two and herself on State Route 167 near Kent in an early morning car accident on Sunday reports The Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Killed in the car accident were Marina Martinez, age 69, of Kent and Cesar Martinez, age 72. The wrong-way driver, a 21 year-old Kent woman, who also died, has not been identified.

Police say the wrong-way driver, entered the highway at the South 277th Street on ramp around 1:35 am in a Mazda Protégé. She crossed three lanes of traffic before colliding head-on with a Honda Accord driven by Marina Martinez.

According to the report a third car, a 1999 BMW 740, was also involved in the accident but its occupants were not seriously injured.

Police are investigating the accident but they do not believe alcohol or drugs was involved.
