Tukwila wrong way driving accident on Interstate 5 injures 6

Just a few days ago we wrote about a Washington wrong way driver who drove nearly 17 miles on Interstate 5 before police were able to stop her. In that wrong way driving incident, no one was injured.

Unfortunately, another wrong-way driver — again on Interstate 5 — has been involved in an accident early Sunday morning, this time sending 6 people to the hospital.

This wrong-way accident occurred on Interstate 5 in Tukwila near the South center exit around 3:30am when the wrong-way driver collided head-on with a car with 5 teenagers on board.

All but one of the injured were taken to Valley Medical Center. The most seriously injured was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle according to KOMO News.

Police suspect that the wrong-way driver was under the effects of alcohol at the time of the accident.

In the other wrong way driving incident, Pamela Drawsby a 60-year-old retired teacher from Olympia, drove at high speeds of up to 100 mph. The Highway Patrol reports that her blood alcohol content (BAC) at the time she was arrested was 0.12 percent. They also believe that she may have been under the influence of prescription medications. Drawsby has entered a not guilty plea.

Head-On Car Accidents

When two cars collide head-on, the results are often deadly. The combined force of two vehicles colliding at 50mph usually totals both vehicles.. Often, the results are deadly.

Jury awards man seriously injured in rear-end car accident $395K

A Florida jury has awarded Lou Sink, 50, $395,000 in damages after his car was rear-ended by an SUV driven by Andrea Derantany, leaving Sink with serious injuries.

Sink suffered multiple injuries in the car accident including fractured ribs and a spinal fracture and rupture. He had to undergo fusion surgery, a laminectomy and his recovery included six months of physical therapy.

Even after the surgeries and therapy, Sink still suffer pains and he has limited range-of-motion.

Sink filed suit against Deratany claiming her negligence caused the accident. He also filed suit against Deratany's spouse because he was owner of the SUV.

The jury awarded Sink $395,000. His medical bills were $180,000.

Defense attorneys have asked for a new trail and a "remittitur" which is a legal term asking the judge to reduce or throw out a jury's verdict.

Sink's injuries are typical of a rear-end car accident. Even at moderate speeds, drivers can experience whiplash or a more severe and permanent injury such as a disk herniation.

Often laymen refer to these kind of injuries as "whiplash". Whiplash is not a medical diagnosis but it describes what happens when there is a hyperflexion/hyperextension injury. In Mr. Sink's case, he suffered a thoracic fracture which is an injury to the middle segment of the vertebral column.

Whiplash injuries can occur in any type of car accident but they most often occur in rear-end collisions. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTS) estimates that approximately 800,000 suffer a whiplash injuries every year and about 33% of these were from rear-end accidents.

This information is provided by Seattle Car Accident Lawyer blog, a service of The Farber Law Group. We represent people who suffered serious injuries due to car accidents including whiplash. With our help, you may recover compensation for your damages.

Tacoma man arrested in I-5 hit-and-run accident that injured 4 women

A Centralia hit-and-run car accident on Interstate 5 injured 4 women late Saturday night. Four women between the ages of 58-71 all suffered back injuries when the car they were riding in was rear-ended by a driver who then fled the accident.

The Olympian reports that a Tacoma man, 30, was speeding in a Mitsubishi Montero on northbound Interstate 5 when he rear-ended a Cadillac driven by a 58-year-old Rochester woman. The Tacoma man then fled the accident scene by foot.

Four women in the Cadillac were taken to Providence Centralia hospital for treatment of back injuries.

The Centralia K-9 unit apprehended the Tacoma man and he faces charges of DUI, reckless driving, hit-and-run among others offenses.

Often a rear-end car accident can leave the victim with whiplash injuries. Whiplash injuries is a descriptive term for hyperflexion/hyperextension injury and occurs when the vehicle is pushed forward on impact and the victim's head snaps backwards. Because the movement is violent and is outside of the neck's normal range of motion, muscles in the neck and upper body are damaged.

The victims in this car accident would be well-advised to contact a personal injury attorney who can determine whether the driver that hit their car was insured.

WSP to step up seat belt patrols in Bellevue, Clyde Hill and all of King County thru June 5

The Bellevue Reporter reports that local law enforcement agencies working in conjunction with the Washington State Patrol are stepping up their enforcement of seat belt laws between May 23 and June 5.

Police departments involved in the "Target Zero" seat belt emphasis patrols include : Auburn, Bellevue, Black Diamond, Burien, Clyde Hill, Covington, Federal Way, Issaquah, Kent, Kirkland, Maple Valley, Mercer Island, Newcastle, North Bend, Pacific, Redmond, Renton, SeaTac, Seattle, Snoqualmie and Tukwila.

Seat belt law emphasis is one proven way to reduce traffic accident fatalities. Studies show that drivers who fail to use a seat belt also engage in other risky behaviors. By concentrating on seat belt enforcement, aggressive driving, distracted driving, equipment violations and speeding, law enforcement can reduce traffic accidents and fatalities.

Washington state has a seat belt compliance rate of nearly 96% which is one of the highest in the nation.

For more information, see Target Zero which explains Washington's plan to end traffic fatalities and serious injuries.

Two seriously injured in motor vehicle accident when car and bus collide

Two people were taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after a Lynnwood motor vehicle accident involving a Community Transit bus.

The HeraldNet.com
of Everett reports that the car accident occurred on Highway 99 near 40th Avenue West around 9am when a car driven by Yollymar Delgado, 22, of Lynnwood, turned into the path of an oncoming bus.

Delgado and his passenger, a woman, were thrown from the car. Their injuries appeared to be serious.

The force of the impact caused Delgado's vehicle to be pushed into a car driven by a 17-year-old boy also from Lynnwood. The teen complained of neck and back pain and he was taken for treatment at an area hospital.

Delgado most likely will be cited with vehicle code RCW 46.61.185 "Vehicle Turning Left" which states that a vehicle turning left within an intersection shall yield the right-of-way to any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction.

It is really unfortunate that Delgado and his passenger were apparently not wearing seat belts at the time of impact. Seat belts prevent motorists from being thrown from vehicle which prevents very serious injuries.

Do you have whiplash symptoms after a Bellevue car accident?

If you've been in a Seattle motor vehicle accident, you may be suffering from a condition called whiplash. Whiplash is not a made-up injury, it's real, it's painful and it can be debilitating. Because it can leave a sufferer with a chronic condition, it is important that a person seek the counsel of an experienced personal injury attorney because often insurance companies discount the pain and suffering of a whiplash victim.

Whiplash can cause a wide-range of symptoms including neck pain, neck stiffness, blurred vision, chronic headaches, back pain, numbness or pain in the legs and arms, jaw pain, vertigo and dizziness.

Whiplash injuries affect the spinal cord and they require treatment, in fact, if left untreated, symptoms can become worse.

If your auto accident was caused by the negligence of another driver, it is considered a personal injury. At The Farber Law Group, we represent car accident victims in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area with injuries including whiplash, paralysis, brain stem injuries, broken necks and other types of injuries involving the spinal cord.

Woman killed when car slams into back of Shelton school bus

A 39-year-old Lacey woman was killed when the car she was riding in slammed into the back of a Shelton School District bus around 6:30 this morning, south of Shelton, reports The Seattle PI.com.

According to the report, a car driven by a 32-year-old Olympia man was driving an SUV at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour when it rear-ended the school bus that had slowed to turn onto Highway 101.

Luckily there were no children on the school bus at the time of the school bus accident. The school bus driver complained of a sore neck and back after the accident which may be symptoms of a whiplash injury.

Witnesses told police they saw the SUV speeding and weaving prior to the accident and the SUV may have not even braked when it hit the bus.

Washington State Troopers are investigating whether alcohol or drugs were involved in the accident. If this is the case, the driver may be charged with Vehicular Homicide. Washington State vehicle code RCW 46.61.520 states that a driver may be charged with Vehicular Homicide if a person is killed in a motor vehicle and the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time, driving recklessly or driving without regard to the safety of others.

Can you get a whiplash injury in a low speed car accident?

We often get asked the question whether it is possible for someone to get a whiplash injury in a low speed car accident. Some times insurance companies balk at paying out on an insurance claim for a whiplash injury when the car accident was described as a fender bender, there were no skid marks or the damage to the vehicles involved is not that substantial. However, one cannot equate the damage to a motor vehicle to a person. Indeed people can and do suffer whiplash injuries which require treatment in low speed car accidents.
seattle whiplash injury attorney
One study published on the National Institute of Health web-site showed that biodynamic stresses which cause slight to moderate vehicle damage may be high enough to cause injuries. Low speed car accidents of just a few miles per hour can be severe enough to cause hyperflexion of the cervical spine and even accidents involving bumper cars at an amusement park have been known to cause whiplash injury.

One should never let an insurance company say that a person is not injured by looking at the physical evidence on a vehicle. A diagnosis by a qualified physician based on standards of orthopedic neurological testing should be sufficient.

Insurance Institute compares 2-door cars with 4-door cars for safety in car accident tests

Automobile manufacturers keep making safety improvement to cars and that is a huge factor in the decrease in car accident fatalities per mile driven over the past five years. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety usually does crash tests on 4-door car models because of the requirements for safety for family use cars. They decided to test five 2-door car models to see how they hold up in crash tests because not all the data from 4-door cars pertain to 2-door cars.

The IIHS tested four small cars and one mid-size car:

  • Chevrolet Cobalt
  • Ford Focus
  • Honda Civic
  • Scion tC
  • Volvo C30

Ratings

There are four ratings give for each crash test: Good, Acceptable, Marginal or Poor. Of the five cars that they tested, all received an Acceptable or better in the three types of crash tests. Of the cars tested, the Volvo and the Ford received the "Top Safety Pick" and all the other vehicles were rated Acceptable or better.

Frontal accident test

All five cars earned a Good in the frontal offset test. In 2007, here were 14,000 car accident fatalities due to frontal car accidents so this is a very important test.

Side impact accident test

Of the five cars tested, only the Ford and the Volvo received a Good rating while the other vehicles all received an Acceptable rating. Side impact car accidents are the second most common type of car accidents resulting in 8,000 people being killed in side impact car accidents in 2007.

The results of this test showed that the 4-door models do not always perform the same as the 2-door-models. The Honda Civic earned a Good when the 4-door model was tested and only an Acceptable with the 2-door model. The Ford Focus actually performed better on the side crash tests with the 2-door model than the 4-door model.

Rear end test

Whiplash injuries including neck sprain and strain are the number one car accident injury. Automakers have been working on the designs of seats and also the restraints to reduce whiplash injuries. In the rear end test, they test how the seats and restraints protect against injury in low-speed rear-end car accidents. They test a stationary vehicle being rear-ended by an SUV or pickup truck at 20mph.

In this test, all five of the cars tested were rated Good except the Scion tC which received an Acceptable rating.
