1,532 Washington drivers illegally pass school bus on any given school day

washington bus accident lawyerSchool bus transportation is a very safe mode of transport for students. Where the danger lies for students is when they are getting on and off the school bus. A new survey conducted by school bus drivers found that many Washington motorists flout Washington law requiring that motorists stop for school buses that have their arms out and lights flashing.

The National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS) had school bus drivers record of a single day how many times the bus was illegally passed. In Washington state, school 3,588 school bus drivers conducted the survey on May 1st, 2013. What they observed was startling:

  • 693 illegal passes in the morning
  • 81 illegal passes during midday
  • 749 illegal passes in the afternoon

Washington state law requires drivers to stop for a school bus that has its red lights flashing regardless on whether it is on a motorists side of the road, the opposite side of the road or at an approaching intersection. The only time a motorist is not required to stop for a school bus with flashing lights is on a divided highway with a median that cannot be crossed and the bus is on the other side of the median. Motorists must stop for school buses when it is dropping off or picking up students on school or private property.

The following video shows a “near miss”, a child almost being hit by a motorist when the school bus had lights flashing and the arm displayed.

The potential for a tragedy is there when motorists do not respect the law.

Washington school bus drivers may report a violation of the school bus stop sign law by preparing a written report to local law enforcement agency. The school bus driver or a school official may deliver the form to law enforcement agencies where a violation can be written.
