The National Insurance Crime Bureauu (NICB) reports that car thefts are down 25% in Washington. The bad news is that the Seattle–Bellevue–Tacoma metropolitan area rank #26 in the nation for the most car thefts per inhabitants.
In Washington state, Yakima ranks the worst and the third worst in the nation with an average of 779.32 thefts per 100,000 people. In 2008, there were 1,828 car thefts in the Yakima area.
The Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue are had 17,561 auto thefts in 2008 which average 525.02 per 100,000 inhabitants. In 2007, there were 24,516 auto thefts in our area and in 2006 there were 31,231 thefts.
Bordering states with Mexico including El Paso and Laredo continue to have the highest rate of car thefts.
