The Washington State Patrol reported that last weekend, July 31st – August 2, was the worst of the year for car accident fatalities. Across Washington State, there were six major car accidents and 10 people were killed. The fatal car accidents occurred in Yakima, Thurston, Lincoln and Snohomish counties.
The Patrol emphasizes that the car accident deaths were largely the fault of drivers making bad decisions. Of the six car accidents:
- Three of the 10 people killed were not wearing seat belts.
- In three of the six accidents, alcohol was involved.
- In all of the accidents, speeding, aggressive driving and driver inattention were factors.
Of the six car accidents, three were single-car accidents, two were two-car accidents and one accident involved four cars.
The Patrol would like drivers to look at these deaths as a warning to make good choices and decisions before they drive. Studies show that wearing seat belts and reducing speed prevents car accident fatalities and using alcohol or drugs puts everyone at risk.
