Burien hit-and-run driver charged with Vehicular Assault after injuring mother and children

King County prosecutors have filed Vehicular Assault charges against a Tukwila man who hit a mother and her children with his car while they were walking on a sidewalk and then fled. Vehicular Assault charges can be made if a person seriously injures another person while driving while intoxicated.

According to a report in The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, John Simmons, age 22, lost control of his car while driving drunk and hit a 31-year-old mother who was walking with her 7-year-old daughter and pushing her twin 11-month-old infants in a stroller. The mother and the twins all suffered cuts and soft-tissue damage and the 7-year old suffered a broken leg, requiring surgery, in the pedestrian accident.

After Simmons hit the four pedestrians, he continued down the street but crashed his car into a utility pole. At that point, Simmons attempted to flee on foot but was tackled and restrained by a bystander.
