Seat belt use in Washington state remains high at 96%

The Washington State Traffic Safety Commission reports that seat belt compliance remains very high in the state at over 96 percent reports The Seattle Times.

Washington is one of the sates with the highest seat belt compliance in the country.

In 1986 the seat belt usage in the state was 36% and there were 582 car accident deaths. In 2008 there were 362 car accident fatalities.

Washington state is working towards 100% seat belt compliance saying it saves lives and saves money. Accident victims who were not wearing seat belts have an average cost of $11,000 more per accident than those who were wearing seat belts.
