Vehicle spinouts, a common cause of car accidents in cold weather

This morning there were numerous car accidents in Western Washington due to spin outs. The Washington State Deport of Transportation (WSDOT) webcam caught the following single car spin out accident on the westbound 520.

A spin out accident is any motor vehicle accident in which the vehicle spins around before or after crashing. Icy road conditions and roads with standing waters can lead to these “rotational collisions” or spin out car accidents. Other causes of spinout accidents are tire failure and road defects.

A spin out accident can be extremely dangerous because as a vehicles spins out it may cross lanes of traffic and crash into oncoming vehicles, light poles, concrete barriers, medians and trees. If a vehicle is spinning at a high speed, it may be involved in multiple collisions before it finally comes to a stop. In a spin out, any loose debris in your vehicle can fly around and strike the driver or occupants which can cause injury.

A spin out accident can result in serious injuries, Including internal injuries, spinal cord injuries and brain injuries
The most common cause of spin out car accidents in Western Washington is hydroplaning which can occur on roads where there is standing water and the vehicle loses traction.

Icy road conditions and freezing weather can also contribute to spin out accidents. Bridges and overpasses can get icy and freeze before other roads and when cars are going too fast for the prevailing conditions, a spin out can occur.

What to do in a spin out?

If your vehicle starts to spin, don’t panic and do not slam on the brakes. You should gently steer in the same direction as the spin to gain control. Do not over compensate.

Tips for avoiding a spin out accident

  • Avoid driving in severe weather.
  • Slow down on icy and wet roads.
  • Buckle up.
  • Remove excess clutter from inside your vehicle.
  • Ensure your tires are properly inflated.
  • Ensure your tires have enough tread.
