A bicyclist in his 40’s was critically injured when he was hit by a car near Military Road S. and South 288th Street in Federal Way this morning around 10:50am.
The injured man was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with life threatening injuries including an apparent head injury and broken bones. The man apparently lost consciousness after rescue workers arrived.
The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet.
In May, Lance David, 54, of Federal Way was killed when he was struck by a car in Seattle.
Many bicyclists ride as a hobby or for leisure but increasingly, more bicyclists are riding their bicycles to commute to work and for daily transportation. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that bicyclists account for two percent of all traffic fatalities. Many of these fatal collisions could be avoided if drivers and bicyclists worked together to share the road safely.
Bicyclists face many dangers as they traverse our local street. We cannot emphasize enough the importance of wearing an ANSI approved bicycle helmet. A bicycle helmet can certain make the difference between life and death in a bicycle accident. Washington state does not have a universal helmet law but King Count, including Seattle, does require that bicyclists wear a helmet.
