Bothell, Washington wrong-way teen driver causes five-car accident on Interstate 405

Seattle’s reports that a 17-year-old driver, who drove south in the northbound lane on Interstate 405 in Bothell, caused an accident that involved five cars and injured one person seriously.

The accident occurred at 12:30 am when the teen drove his Toyota Corolla the wrong-way in the HOV lane and crashed into a BMW driven by a 43-year-old Bothell woman. The BMW was then successively hit by three other cars. The driver of the BMW was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment of serious injuries.

Also injured in the crash were the 17-year-old wrong-way driver and a 69-year-old driver of a Honda Accord.

The 17-year-old drive was treated for injures at Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland and was then jailed at King County Juvenile Detention Center. Troopers believe he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The teen may be charged with vehicular assault, RCW 46.61.522. Under Washington State statutes, a driver can be charged with vehicular assault if he or she seriously injures someone while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In Washington State, a driver is considered under the influence if their blood alcohol concentration is 0.08 or higher.
