Change in Washington’s cell phone law awaits Governor’s signature

The Washington State Legislature voted 60-37 to strengthen Washington’s cell phone law to make it a primary offense to use a hand-held cell phone while driving. The proposed to legislature awaits the Governor’s signature to make it the law. View Senate Bill 6345 as passed by the legislature.

The current cell phone law makes it a secondary offense, meaning the police can not stop a driver for cell phone use alone. By making it a primary offense, police can cite a motor for no other reason than the driver was using a hand held cell phone.

The legislature believes that the there will be fewer car accidents and the roads will be safer by passing this law.
