Dennis LeRoy Anderson, age 61, of Proctor Minnesota, drove his chair while his blood alcohol content was 0.29 percent, more than three times the legal limit. In Washington state, the legal limit for drunk driving is 0.08%.
Anderson was driving his chair, which has a gasoline-powered lawnmower engine and has headlights and an antenna, when he ran into a Dodge Intrepid parked outside of a bar. Anderson’s chair is quite the engineering feat — it has a steering wheel and can travel at speeds between 15 and 20 miles per hour. Anderson had previously lost his driver’s license because a previous DUI.
Anderson received 180 days of jail time and a $2,000 fine for his driving-a-chair-while-intoxicated plea. His jail time and half of the fine was stayed if he complies with court-ordered monitoring, random alcohol testing and meets other conditions. His La-Z-Boy was impounded and will be sold at police auction.
