Highway accident fatality rate at lowest level in 41 years

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced some great news: highway traffic accident fatalities are at their lowest level since 1961. The fatality rate — the number of deaths per 100 million vehicle miles — is the lowest on record at 1.28. Another positive statistics is seat belt usage continues to rise and Washington is one of the top states with 96.5% seat belt use.

There are many factors in the lower fatality rate and these are:

  • Increased seat belt use
  • Increased DUI awareness, education and enforcement
  • Safer vehicles

Of the motor vehicle accident fatalities, approximately 5,154 were motorcyclists, 21,647 were drivers and 8,657 were passengers.
