Rochester, Washington car accident kills 2 in crossover accident on I-5

The driver of a Subaru Legacy and a male passenger were killed in a car accident in Thurston County this morning around 11am reports It was not reported whether the car’s driver was male or female. Two children in the back seat were both injured. A 6-year-old boy suffered “minor injuries” and is being treated at Providence Centralia Hospital. A 10-year old girl was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and her injuries are unknown.

The accident occurred around milepost 88 on the I-5. The Subaru was traveling Southbound when the driver lost control and crossed the median, went under the cable barriers, and crashed head-on with a Northbound semi-truck. The semi then pushed the car hundreds of feet before the truck smashed into the cable barriers which stopped it.

Cable barriers have been in the news lately with the release of a Washington State Department of Transportation study that found cable barriers effective in 95% of crossover accidents. In Marysville, however, the WSDOT is replacing some cable barriers with concrete ones in a dangerous 10 mile stretch of road where there have been multiple fatalities.
