Snohomish County sheriff seeking information on hit-and-run driver in death of woman

Kathryn Hyde-Donohue, 53, of Lake Stevens, was killed in a pedestrian accident sometime Tuesday according to The Seattle Times. Now, the Snohomish County sheriff’s office is seeking information on the vehicle and driver that hit and killed her.

Hyde-Donohue’s body was discovered on the 4400 block of South Machias Road near Lake Stevens around 6pm on Tuesday night but she may have been killed much earlier in the morning.

Police have impounded a vehicle that may have been involved in the accident. They are asking anyone with information about the hit-and-run accident or the movements of Hyde-Donohue prior to her death to contact the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office at 425-388-3845.

Leaving the scene of an injury accident is illegal and can result in a class B or class C felony. Washington Revised Statute 46.52.020 states, “A driver of any vehicle involved in an accident resulting in the injury to or death of any person or involving striking the body of a deceased person shall immediately stop such vehicle at the scene of such accident or as close thereto as possible but shall then forthwith return to, and in every event remain at, the scene of such accident.”

Unfortunately, far too many drivers leave the scene of an accident. According to 2009 Washington State Collision data, there were 4,630 Washington hit-and-run accidents involving a parked car and 2,782 hit-and-run accidents involving a driver hitting the rear of a stopped car.

When a hit-and-run driver is apprehended, which is often the case, they face criminal charges. Victims and victims’ families may also seek compensation in civil court for damages and wrongful death. Washington state’s wrongful death statute allows the family of the deceased seek compensation of behalf of their loved one.
