A 21-year-old Seattle man was seriously injured when two vehicles collided as they were racing on Highway 509 in South Seattle reports the Washington State Patrol. The driver of one car was taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment. The driver of the other vehicle involved in the collision, a 22-year-old Seattle man, was arrested for investigation of vehicular assault and DUI.
Speed and alcohol certainly do not mix while driving but speed alone can be deadly.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reports that speed is a factor in many fatal car accidents and that speeding is involved in about 30% of all car accidents involving a fatality.
According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, speeding triples the odds of being involved in a car crash.
Why does speeding increase car accident risk?
Speeding is most certainly a safety problem. Speed not only increases the risk of an accident but it also has a major impact on the severity of injuries. Speeding increases the chance of an accident in three ways:
- When a vehicle is traveling at high speed, the driver has less time to react to emergency situations.
- The stopping distance is increased
- Because of the Laws of Physics, speeding increases the car accident energy exponentially.
There are limits inherent in car design which means that at high speeds, many of the safety features of the car just cannot protect the occupants.
Which drivers are most likely to speed?
Most drivers exceed the speed limit from time-to-time but the typical high-speed driver is a male under the age of 30 as was the case in the Seattle accident we cited above. While drivers of all ages and sexes are known to exceed the speed limit, some studies found that speeding per mile travelled is three times as high for younger drivers than those over 30.
Street racing is illegal and often results in not only injuries to those involved in the activity but to innocent pedestrians and motorists. Street racing is often the cause of wrongful death.
The law allows victims of car accidents, especially pedestrians or innocent motorists, to seek compensation for their injuries caused by illegal street racing.
