Tacoma considering expanding red light camera program to catch speeders and red light runners

The Tacoma City Council is considering the amendment of a city ordinance which would allow the city to install “red light” cameras at more intersections throughout the city reports The Tacoma Daily Index. Currently, the ordinance only allows the city to install them in school speed zones. The change in the ordinance would allow the city to install the cameras at problem intersections.

A class action lawsuit has been filed against 19 Washington Cities including Tacoma regarding excessive fines levied against motorists who have received red light tickets.

Anecdotal evidence shows that red light cameras have lowered motor vehicle accidents at intersections where they have been installed. At one Lacey intersection, car accidents have been reduced from 21 to 1 after a red light camera was installed.
