This week, there have been two head-on car accidents resulting in two fatalities U.S. Highway 2 . In both car accidents, the driver of one car hit crossed the centerline and crashed into a vehicle coming from the other direction.
- On Friday, a driver was killed when he crossed the center-line and struck another vehicle near Baring. The driver, a man, was killed and a woman driving another car was taken to the hospital.
- On Thursday, the driver of a stolen black Honda was killed when he crossed the centerline and hit a Ford F-150 pickup truck head on. The driver of the pickup truck, a 45-year-old man, and his 16-year-old son were both injured in the accident. The father was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with serious injuries and his son was treated for a broken arm locally.
U.S. 2 Motor Vehicle Accidents
Each fatal crash on Highway 2 (also known as the Steven-pass Highway) brings publicity to the fact that the stretch of highway between Snohomish and Skykomish is dangerous. In fact, the highway averages at least one serious crash a month and is rated one of the most dangerous highways in Washington state.
U.S. 2 is a high speed interstate highway but it is dangerous because it has only two lanes, is curvy, allows high speed traffic while the development, design and maintenance of the highway has not kept up with the growth of the traffic in the area.
In one eight year period, 45 people were killed in accidents on U.S.2 between Snohomish and Stevens pass and 15 of those were crossover collisions.
The Washington State Department of Transportation has a route development plan which identified safety problems along the U.S. 2 highway corridor including Snohomish, Monroe, Sultan, Gold Bar, Index and Skykomish. Residents of the area have been clamoring for improvements to the highway for at least a decade due to the number of accidents and the poor traffic flow and congestion.
In 2007, DOT estimated that it would take 20 years to install all of the 56 projects called for in the development plan, costing the state $1.84 billion. Now, five years later, the cost has probably significantly increase.
