Police later arrested the hit-and-run driver, Antonio Eugene Cellestine, age 18, of Vancouver. Cellestine was a former pupil where Patterson worked. He faces charges of hit-and-run and driving with a suspended license.
The bicycle accident occurred on Northeast St. Johns Road. Patterson regularly commuted to and from work by bicycle. He was wearing a helmet. A memorial service for Patterson will be held on September 23 at the high school.
In 2008, a total of 714 bicycle riders were killed in crashes with motor vehicles. 87% of those killed are male and 91% were not wearing helmets. 12% of all bicyclist deaths occurred in the month of September.
