The Washington State Department of Transportation announced that they have closed State Route 20 — the North Cascades Highway– between milepost 134, seven miles east of Diablo Dam and milepost 171, nine miles west of Mazama. Four inches of new snow fell on Wednesday night and forecasts are calling for up to 3 feet of over the weekend. With every inch of new snow, avalanche danger is greatly increased over the highway.
DOT crews will close gates so that no one is unexpectedly stranded between the two mileposts. The date of closure of the highway varies but crews usually close it between Thanksgiving and the middle of December. Motorists can expect it to open in the later parts of April or some time in May.
