Washington State Patrol trooper injured in accident while chasing speeder

The Washington State Patrol is searching for a driver of a blue Honda which pulled out in front of a Trooper, causing a car accident, and then left the accident scene. The Trooper was attempting to stop a speeding vehicle on eastbound SR 502 near 50th Avenue, just west of Battleground, Washington when the Honda pulled out in front of the Trooper, who had his emergency lights on. The Honda stopped abruptly and the Trooper, Todd Gates, ran off the roadway attempting to avoid crashing into the Honda.

The patrol car ended up on its side after skidding across both lanes of SR 502 and landing on its side. The blue Honda left the scene of the accident, driving right past the Trooper’s vehicle.

Trooper Gates sustained minor injuries.

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident or has information about the blue Honda should contact Detective Matt Hughes at 360-260-6333. Trooper Gates believes the driver may have been a woman.

It is inconceivable to think that someone would leave the scene of an accident. Every witness is morally obligated to stay at the accident and call 9-1-1 for help for the injured person. In the case of a head injury, getting immediate help could mean the difference between life and death.

A person can be indicted for leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in great bodily injury if:

  • The defendant was operating a motor vehicle and was involved in an accident
  • The defendant knew that he/she was involved in an accident
  • Defendant knowingly and unlawfully left the scene of the accident and
  • The accident resulted in serious bodily injury to another person.
