Seattle’s KIRO TV.com reports that a 26-year-old woman was seriously injured in a pedestrian accident when she was hit by a pickup truck while crossing the street in the 15200 block of Tukwila International Boulevard around 2am on Monday morning.
The driver of the pickup truck left the accident scene but police followed a fluid trail and found the truck at 13000 block of 34th Avenue South. Police used dogs to search for the suspect and found and arrested him.
The driver of the truck may be charged with Vehicular Assault because police believe that alcohol was involved in the accident. Vehicular Assault, RCW 46.61.522, can be charged if a person is seriously injured in an accident and the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol. The driver may also be charged with hit-and-run. Washington Vehicle Code RCW 46.52.020 states that a driver of any vehicle involved in an accident resulting in the injury or death of any person shall immediately stop their vehicle or as close to as possible until the police arrive.
In addition to criminal charges, victims of hit-and-run drivers can potentially have a successful claim under civil law asking for damages including lost wages, rehabilitation costs and medical expenses.
