The Washington State Patrol (WSP) is seeking witnesses to a fatal pedestrian accident that occurred in Enumclaw on Halloween night.
According to a WSP media release, a 16-year-old male teen from Enumclaw was walking with a 16-year-old female companion on the right shoulder of SR 410 at milepost 23 in Enumclaw when he was struck and killed by a Nissan pickup truck. His female companion was not injured in the accident.
The driver of the pickup truck, a 20-year-old male from Buckley, is being investigated for Vehicular Homicide. Vehicular Homicide can be charged if a person is killed in a motor vehicle accident and the driver was driving under the influence, driving recklessly or driving without regard to the safety of others.
Pedestrian Safety on Roadways
This tragic accident is a reminder that pedestrians should exercise caution when walking on roadways that do not have sidewalks. The following safety rules can help keep pedestrians safe:
- Pedestrians must use sidewalks if they are available.
- If sidewalks are not provided, pedestrians should walk on the left side of the roadway or its shoulder facing traffic.
- Pedestrians should wear reflective clothing
What to do if your vehicle becomes disabled on a highway
Every year, pedestrians are killed on highway when their vehicles become disabled. Sometimes, the person killed is a tow truck driver or other good Samaritan who has stopped to aid the distressed driver.
In light of highway pedestrian accidents, the Washington State Patrol encourages drivers to use caution when their vehicles are disabled or when they encounter a disabled vehicle on the highway. If your vehicle breaks down or if you are involved in a motor vehicle accident, the WSP encourages you to remain in your vehicle until help arrives, if possible. However, if your vehicle is stalled on the roadway or disabled in the roadway and it cannot be moved, you should get out of the vehicle and get as far away from it as possible and call 9-1-1 for help.
